Best Spyware and Virus Protection?

I just got my new 13'' Macbook a couple days ago and I want to get feedback from all of you as to which programs are best to protect from both spyware and viruses. I used to use Spybot Search and Destroy and I used to use Norton Internet Security on my WIndows computers, although I now absolutely hate Norton because it's such a system hog. I need general antivirus protection and a firewall as well.

13'' Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2 GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM , 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 3 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz Bus Speed, 232.57 GB Hard Dr

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums and to the Mac

OS X has a decent firewall built in and most Mac users stick with it

Likewise few Mac users use additional Spyware or anti virus beyond the OS capabilities - I have never had a problem on any of my Macs - and have had problems on most of my PCs even though I have always had LOTS of add ons protection (Norton, Spybot S&D, zone alarm, AdAware, etc)

THere are some but they are generally considered unnecessary

None. At least no anti-virus/anti-spyware software.

Although there have been cases of concept virii written to target Mac OS X, there is currently nothing in the wild which will compromise your system.

Not to mention that Apple is adamant on releasing solid Security Updates to its users.

As far as spyware is concerned, any spyware program installed on a Mac (that a Mac-based anti-spyware application will identify) had been done intentionally, as in, for example, a key-logging program installed by a company's IT department to monitor employee activity.

Avoid any OS X-based Norton product like the Plague... I've read posts from various users how it wrecked havoc to their OS.

Leopard has built-in firewall settings under the "Sharing" preference pane. Turning this on and tweaking these settings should suffice; you don't need any additional third-party firewall applications (e.g. ZoneAlarm for PCs) on top of this. (and possibly your router's built-in firewall settings, if you own one)

Hope this helps,
Steve
