PowerBookG4 to SHARP LC19" via DMI/HDMI

I've just received a 19" SHARP LC-19SB25U which brags HDMI connectivity and is advertised to serve as a "PC" monitor. The SHARP is to replace my Ölevia 27" which I had absolutely no problems with.

When I connect the DVI/HDMI cable to the SHARP, I'm offered only two resolution options:
1280x720 (which causes a "Not compatible with this signal" error)
1920x540 (which displays stretched, with no ability to adjust this)

Question: If the SHARP seems to support HDMI input from my Mac, how do I configure the output signal to something useful? I would like to output via DVI/HDMI to the SHARP at a 1280x720 resolution, and have a signal display.

The second part, or plan B:
The SHARP advertises support as a PC Monitor via an "Analog RGB" or VGA Monitor cable.
I want to double check this process: To connect a digital-out (DVI) to a analog VGA cable, I need to buy a $20 DVI/VGA adaptor (since Apple struck VGA ports in 2002) and the $15 VGA monitor cable.

VGA technology has been around for about as long as I have. Is there any way to connect my digital-out computer video to a digital television without buying $40 worth of analog cable?

I've called SHARP support and they don't seem to understand why a computer has a DVI port. I keep telling them its not a PC.

Hi, Ian. I can't help you with the resolution issue, but I do know that the DVI > VGA adapter mentioned in your post was supplied with your Powerbook when it was new. If you bought it new, check around and see whether you can turn up the adapter.

Since a standard VGA cable used to be how almost every PC was connected to its CRT monitor for years, you should be able to find one at any used-computer outlet, or even a local thrift store, for a couple of dollars.
