Restore Iphone to factory settings without backup?

I have a 1st gen iphone that i just sold and need to send to the guy. I have created backups but not right out of the box. I was wondering how you reset it to factory specs? I thought i could just do the 2.0 update but at least one guy that has gotten the unofficial 2.0 said that he still has some of his stuff on the phone even after. Thanks in advance.

You will want to restore the iPhone via iTunes, which will erase all of your content and uninstall and re-install the iPhone OS. Once the restore process is complete, you'll have the choice to either "restore from backup" or "set up as a new phone". Choose "set up as a new phone" to keep it in its factory condition, without your content. The backup will only be synced to the iPhone if you choose "restore from backup".

If you're just concerned with erasing all the content off the device, you can do so by going to Settings> General> Reset> Erase all content and settings. This will not erase and re-install the iPhone OS, just erase your content + settings.
