ITunes Burning Error 4200 - Windows XP

I recently purchased an HPa1130n running iTunes 4.9. It was working fine up until a week ago when I started getting errors that say "cancelling burn... unknown error 4200". I have read a few posts in this forum and would like for someone to help me get my system back up and burning. I've done the obvious (slowing the speed, trying different disks, etc). I've also checked my DMA settings to ensure that they are correct. From what I have read so far, I think iTunes is having trouble communicating with my CD Burner.

Help me obi-wan-kenobi.. you're my only hope...

hi R R!

okay, sounds like you've already been to the "Tips" forum here, and the advanced troubleshooting Apple KB doc on burning. Have you done the rounds of your manufacturers to ensure you've got the latest drivers and firmware and also been to Windows update to see if there's a useful update lying about there?

I can also throw some more documentation your way from Apple and MS:

http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324129

... but the fact that you've had a sudden onset here means that we can conduct a few more investigations of our own.

so, if you've got time:

(1) could you please go to itunes "help > run CD diagnostics" and post it here? (you've already given us lots of good info, but we might as well get that on the table as well.)

(2) could you please tell us if you installed/uninstalled/upgraded
b any
hardware or software at about the time that this nonsense started happening?

(3) is your PC being a peculiar beast in any other ways at the moment? if so, could you describe the peculiar behavior?

(4) could you check your error logs for us. right-click "my computer", select "manage". click your event viewer. we should look through the application and system logs for:

(a) any cluster of warning or error events that happened at about the time that this burning nonsense started happening
(b) any warning or errors that seem to be conciding with any failed burns
(c)
b any
errors or warnings that "you just seem to get a lot of". (it's possible that a pre-existing condition has just flared up savagely recently.)

(probably worth having a quick look at your security log just in case anything peculiar-looking is happening there ... lots of errors and warnings for no obvious reasons)

if you find any "characteristic" error/warning events, click on one of each kind to bring up a window. note down the
b Source, EventID and Description
of the event, and post back to us with your findings (if any).

Thanks for the prompt response b.

Here are some of the things you asked about:

(2) New software added

I recently installed NERO then updated to 6.6 trial. I suspect that this has something to do with it as the last time i burned a CD sucessfully was a day before I installed/updated NERO.

(3) I tried to alternatively burn in windows media player and was also unsucessful.

(4) I see a ton of 7 or 8 events ranging from 100, 101, 102, 103 that are related to database engines but nothing related to iTunes. I see two ACEEventLogs from today:

0000000001: 2005-09-03 12:40:07:203 Systemtray cannot start - ACE Runtime not detected
Error Called by: ATI.ACE.CLI.EXE.CLI::Main processID:00348 threadID:(CLISystemtray ) domainName:(CLI.exe ) assemblyName:(CLI, Version=1.2.2006.283, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=90ba9c70f846762e)

(5) It just got worse. I attempted to burn another disk and now I don't even get the error. When prompted to insert a blank disk and after clicking the burn icon, the top grey screen just blinks "checking media" a bunch of times then it times out. I don't even get to the "preparing to write" stage.

Thanks again!

gaaah. hi R R.

okay ... looks like you might have a screaming burner software conflict going on here. the rough story is that non-MS software does odd things to the XP registry. the likelihood of something unpleasant happening seems to increase if there's more than one package on a machine. the conflicts i'm most familiar with are old-roxio+itunes, which tends to flare up when itunes is upgraded (apparently due to the effects of the uninstall of the previous version of itunes).

not nearly so familiar with any equivalent stories to do with Nero ... there's some documentation on Nero problems in the MS troubleshooting doc i gave you earlier.

might be able to focus in on something relevant a bit faster based on the WMP-not-working clue. what version of WMP are you running?

Thanks again b!

I would rather focus on the Nero issue if thats okay. I have alot of music that is in AAC format that I would like burn onto CD and WMP doesn't play AAC.

I just reinstalled NERO and it seems to be the only thing recognizing the drive. It is the only burning sofware working at the moment.

Any other idea's would be very helpful.

🙂 yeah, the WMP angle is an attempt at an end run on the itunes problem. searching for Nero errors is telling me how to fix Nero (which is working for you), most of my itunes/Nero conflict information has to do with Nero 5.x ... so i figure if we can work out how to get WMP working, we might find some information relevant to getting itunes working (in addition to Nero).

okay...

I am running WMP 10. I don't use this app very much but I have in the past used it for burning music. I created a playlist that I sent to the burnlist and got the following error. I tried it on several CD-R types and still nothing.

Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs.

Someone else mentioned that there could be conflicts with ASPI. I hear that Nero is bossy and it has its own ASPI layer. I went to Adaptec site and downloaded the ASPI Installation Verification tool and saw that I did not have any ASPI drivers loaded. I think there could be something here but I don't want to load them until I have more information.

Here is where I was pointed to:

what do ya think b?

Sep 3, 2005 6:39 PM in response to R R

hmmmmmm. you got me thinking about something with that ... itunes uses GEAR drivers for burning and importing. if this is a problem with Nero conflicting with this sort of thing, it's plausible that GEAR could already have a handle on it.

here's a link through to the GEAR site (it goes via the GEAR drivers for itunes). I know they have a support forum there ... perhaps they've got either some documentation (or an online troubleshoot record) that might be helpful:

Hi again!

Okay. Here is what I found out. I uninstalled Nero using the Neroclean and Neroexpressclean tool and rebooted. I uninstalled iTunes and rebooted. I reinstalled iTunes and loaded the updated gear driver. I updated the firmware for my cd/dvd read/writer. And guess what... It still doesn't work!

I don't think this is a Nero issue... I have browsed a few other forums and it seems like a random problem...

gaah. so the coincidence of the Nero upgrade/install, the onset of the itunes problem and the existence of the WMP problem may just be a red herring ...

okay, i think i've run out of things to suggest to you that are sensible re fixing this beast. you're not getting error/warnings events that i've seen before that indicate a hardware fault. we've beaten the Nero angle to death with a stick. i think you've done everything that anyone else has suggested on the forums here so far.

so, maybe just steadily keep working through those MS troubleshooting references from earlier in the thread. keep an eye on the Apple references listed here:

b noir, "error codes" #4, 08:56am Aug 25, 2005 CDT

(they periodically get updated ... check the bottom right of the page for dates of the most recent modification.)

head here to see if there's any documentation we've missed from the Apple side of things, and also to submit your CD diagnostics to Apple:

http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/

(it may just conceivably help speed up the KB doc revision process ...)

keep refreshing your thread here with a post every week or so to see if we've accumulated any more wisdom on the 4200 (not a vain hope ... we've made progress with the 4251, the 4310 and the 4450 recently, and threads keep going quiet when i refer people to those reports).

sorry, i'm quite literally suggesting going into a holding pattern here ... wish i could have been more direct help to you.

I give up! Can anyone suggest using another application? This error is killing a lot of people and it feels like nothing is being done to solve the problem. This has happpened to at least five people I know and many others on this site. I am uninstalling itunes and looking for another media player.

🙂 thought you might have tried it ... but i figured at the very least that my reply would help keep you in everyone's sight. (much like this one ...)

okay, fingers crossed, if toonz has a free moment, she might be able to spot what's going on. 'fraid we're both still pretty busy over in "Installation & Upgrades" though.
