Activation / Wireless Account Number

Apple states you need ,"Current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)". Is this only for transferring a previous number? If I am fine with getting a new number do I not need this information? Don't want to show up and not be able to complete activation. (I'm currently with Verizon)
