Apple server shutdown is blocking complete 2.0 update

I just got off the phone (it's now 9:19 a.m.) with an Apple tech support rep because my last update to 2.0 would not complete -- the "accessing iTunes store" part. The tech said that Apple's server has shut down because of the huge surge of people who are updating their phones. They are now working on it, he said.

Thanks everyone for the updates on the problems. Glad to see I wasn't alone with iTunes timing out.
For anyone still asking-YES it's okay to eject the iPhone (and close iTunes if you want) once you reach the timeout issue. I downloaded the update a little after 6am pacific and finally finished at 745am. I spent an hour trying to connect to iTunes and almost as much time restoring my iPhone.
The update is for the iPhone not the iTouch! I keep seeing people with iTouch's complaining about the same issue both here and other forums. I really hope you know you're gonna have to pay $10 for the update or I'm guessing you're gonna be SUPER ******! :{
Apple really should have foreseen this problem, but then again WE should've as well. Major company with millions of customers + major release = some type of problems. I switched to Mac 6 months ago and even with issues like this I'll take Mac over PC any day of the week.
Hey, was anyone an AT&T customer back in 2003? Remember when LNP (local number portability) came about? AT&T's systems literally crashed for 3 weeks and it was so bad you couldn't even make a payment to your account because of the downed systems. HOWEVER, the systems would still suspend your account for a late payment AND AT&T had no way to turn your cell phone back on until the systems came back on line (all 3 weeks for some people). Believe me, working in that call center sucked. Yeah this sucked too, but keep this in perspective guys! 🙂 But if you still wanna bash Apple I suppose you could always say, "Apple WAS the forbidden fruit!"
Hope your guys' day gets better! Hang in there, it'll work soon!!

Like others I now have a bricked iphone with no ability to go back to the old 1.14.
This update is definitely something out of a Microsoft text book. Did they secretly go to Redmond or have some of Microsofts employees infiltrated the Apple headquarters.
Nw if I were an investor in Apple I would be very cautious about pouring money into them for the future. Here's why: Inability to handle simple upgrades like Microsoft. Yes Apple your product is extremely good but your planning and preparation *****. ***** is a polite word by the way. Next, most people dont realize and probably only found out that if you dont qualify for a upgrade all that 199, 299 BS is just that total BS.. its more like 299 499 for the 8gb and 16 GB. If you are looking at purchasing an Iphone anytime soon I would be say wait, wait, wait. Yeah its cool and a great device but because the numnuts at ATT have a say in the operation then as you would expect with a phone company operation its extremely cluster f'ed right now. And ATT does not even care about you so don't expect a caring customer service oriented person to help you. The phone company and these update problems definitely make me feel like I am renting the phone... Even tho I will pay 499. for the 3G.
I think I can invest 500.00 into something more useful.. and that wont be apple stock. STAY AWAY FOR NOW..

Gotta love this. I finally got through to the help desk and was told since I was using XP that I should remove itunes and then re-install it but here is the kicker they went on to state the only problem was that their link was down for the new itunes update so I couldn't really do that. I questioned further this idea that somehow the problem was a compatibility problem with windows when there was clearly a problem going on with the server overload and I asked if I waited and kept trying would I be able to get the download completed. The help desk rep basically said that it was likely that would work too. How cheap is that to blame your competitor simply because you darn well messed up your global roll out.

WIMPS!

I just accessed the iTunes store and completed my 2.0 update for my First Gen iPhone. It was irritating to wait, but I just kept trying. You gotta expect this when everyone is doing it at the same time.

You don't need to keep unplugging the phone. You can just click away from the phone (in iTunes) and then click on it again over and over and over. Each time you get error message, click OK. Then try again. It took me about 50 tries, but eventually I got through.

The first app I downloaded is the remote control (which is FREE). It's super cool and will be great for controlling my home stereo system at parties. It's cool stuff like this that keeps me evangelizing for Apple. Honestly, no other device, or OS, even comes CLOSE.

FInally got it. It's like calling in to a radio station for a contest and getting a busy signal...

After about 100 attempts, it just worked. Just keep at it> I do not recommend plugging and unplugging the iPhone. Instead, the following process, repeated over and over, works:

1. Get error message.
2. Press OK.
3. Quit iTunes.
4. Restart iTunes.
5. Go to Step 1.

Good luck!

Yup. Apple screwed this one up royally. My iBrick is not working at all because of all this mess. It's been disabled since 9:00 AM EST this morning. Can't re-activate the phone. Stuck in emergency mode. Now I'm getting a -4 Error code. Brilliant, Apple. How stupid can you be????? I hope it doesn't take 24 hours to get this thing activated like it was told somebody by an Apple Service rep. And oh yeah, I waited on the phone an hour and 1/2 this morning before I could talk to a human. Niiiice.

Apple tried to tell me that the reason the phone is now locked up is the 2.0 release was not intended for an 2G version but for the 3G new one. I told the tech thats crap the new one already has 2.0 why would you need and update for it!

Well my phone has the 2.0 update but its locked up because there server is not reactivating my phone so now i have a brick and no way to restore the old version 1.14. what now check every 10 min for there server to work.

Gee maybe if they had an Windows Based Server this would not happen!!!!
