I'm stuck with a brick as well. I've tried what you suggested and gotten disappointing results.

As of 11:06 am EDT, my phone only shows the usb to iTunes connection screen.

I connected the iPhone to my machine and iTunes went to the iTunes store, "Accessing iTunes Store", this has been going on since 10 am EDT.

When I disconnect and reconnect the iPhone I get, "We could not complete your iTunes Store Request. An unknown error occured (-9838). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.

Sadly there is no mention that my iPhone will be useless...

    Am I dead? Please advise.

I wonder how many millions of dollars in lost productivity this is causing iPhone users around the world...

(I've been trying to get mine to update for an hour-and-a-half now. Even going back and forth between other tabs and the iPhone, no luck.)

You must be a moron. Do you think we'd be bothering to write these messages if the d**m iPhone worked? We've upgraded and we CAN'T restore and we CAN'T access ANYTHING on the phone.

I tend to agree with the observations that today is a poor choice for updating your iPhone. Given what happened with the initial release, it was inevitable, that no matter how much planning for today, a worldwide release was going to unleash a bucket load of Murphy's Law problems that even the best crystal ball gazer could not have foretold. Having spent some 30 years in technology and communications, it never ceases to amaze me that you can plan as much as you want, even go for redundant redundancy, but, when the flood comes - it comes and stuff simply gets overloaded. Add to that the countless thousands who are impatient and keep clicking everything in sight on the screen to try to make it work faster .... I can't wait for 9:00am on the West Coast. Be afraid, be very afraid ....

Footnote: I dowloaded the Apple iPhone1,2-2.05A347restore.ipsw file yesterday, upgraded iTunes to 7.7, and got it all done in about 15 minutes without a hitch.

I think I will wait for my 3G purchase till Monday and let all the hysteria and fighting for server time evaporate.

I kept going between music and my iPhone for probably 45 minutes. I am now syncing super monkey ball. The entire process took me a little under 4 hours. Be patient.

Well, at least now the error message number has changed to (-4)......! After two plus hours of clicking on the store it's still not working. Apple's servers are clearly overloaded - even the download speed for these forum pages is much slower than usual.

Like many others, I don't have much sympathy for those who tried this upgrade on a day when they have mission critical appointments and other work. It's like trying to repair a plane in the air..... If I had those issues I'd stay away from any software upgrade for at least a few days, after all having the latest version is not necessary for the tasks they described.

Clearly Apple has screwed up big time on this and on the MobileMe service which is also down...

Talking about being the victim of your own success!

I am also getting the (-4)error right now. Anyone know what the deal with this one is?

I'm also getting the error 4 between the 9838 errors.

    Anyone? Bueller?

I'm sure having a phone is very important to everyone. If you knew this would go flawlessly, then you were wrong to even think that. For those in business, shame on you for being bleeding edge.

I'm sure some of you need your phone to help you in your volunteer work in Africa, giving out free medical care. For you people, see above - shame on you. I hope it comes back soon, really.

For the rest of you that want to text your friend about what you are wearing this weekend (the majority of you no doubt), then next time (3.0 firmware) don't do the first day. Duh.

My phone is finally restoring after almost two hours. Don't give up hope. Keep going back and forth between Iphone and Music or Movies.
