"Restore in Progress" hanging for more than an hour...
I finally got past the initial "Accessing iTunes Store" phase after about 3 hours of clicking backing and forth as others have suggested. Now, however, my phone is activated but seems to be hanging on the "Restore in Progress" phase in which it trys to restore the iPhone from the backup in iTunes. It's been doing this for an hour already. Anybody else at the same place I am? How long is it taking? Should I disconnect and try again or just keep waiting?
I would keep waiting, perhaps call Apple even though it could take just as long to get through! My phone just activated and it only took about 15mins to get through the process.
well... I'm still hanging at the "Restoring iPhone from backup" phase in iTunes. It's now been nearly 2 hours. I'm planning to go home soon... should I keep it connected to my computer all weekend or just disconnect it? I fear that disconnecting it could screw up the back-up.
OK. I got impatient and disconnected the cable, after which the iphone automatically restarted and everything seems to be OK. It appears that the restore was complete but iTunes was still hanging for some reason. Everything seems to me OK.
I then re-synced it with iTunes, and now all of my contacts, meetings, settings are back on there, along with some new apps. All seems to be working correctly. My music is gone, but I knew that would happen. I'll re-sync that on my home computer.
I tried to get everything right away in the morning but the server was so overloaded by the entire world of new and old iPhone users that nothing went through. I just waited and was able to get through the restoration process in less than 3 minutes. Just be a little more patient and the servers will clear up.
I had this problem today and in one case I waited about 12 hours before I disconnected in frustration. When I disconnected the phone claimed the restore was complete and rebooted. However, not all my data was recovered. This included photos, music, settings, favorites, contacts, and weather cities. I performed the restore 2 more times and each time I I got stuck at the "restore in progress" screen. However, these times I waited only 10 minutes before disconnecting. Each time more data was recovered. Finally, on the 3rd restore the process went smoothly past the "restore in progress" screen into a reboot and Viola! all my data and settings were back - except my music. But that is a small price to pay.
Moral of the story - try restoring several times. YMMV. Good luck.
a few last pointers... a) consider connecting your iphone to a usb slot on the PS as opposed to connecting it to a hub connected to the pc, b) disconnect all unnecessary peripherals on your usb and firewire ports (extra disks, scanner, burner, hubs, etc.)
