iTunes songs (fairplay version 2) on iPod Touch

Well something not totally related to the delay with 2.0 update.

Just bought the new Peter Gabriel single from iTunes and the "conditions of purchase" have changed - due to the songs now being "Fairplay version 2" they will only play on iPhones/ iPod Touch which have been installed/ updated with 2.0.

Well apart that I can't now put the song onto my iPod Touch due to not yet having 2.0 installed (not through lack of trying) this seems like a sure fire way of people HAVING to update their software to version 2.0 or not being able to play downloaded iTunes songs !!!!!!!

It's because the emegency memo on the day of release about supposed "security fixes" didn't get everyone to run out and purchase. 😉

Did it really do that? It seems unlikely, as that would mean all 5G and prior iPods would no longer function with the store. That seems a bit extreme, even for Apple where Mac users run out and buy a new version of the OS regardless of actual needs.

No, I should have been more clearer - the new conditions when buying a song say that due to the song being "Fairplay Version 2" it notes that it will ONLY play on iPhones/ iPod Touch that have been installed or updated with the new 2.0 update. All other iPods are not affected - the song plays on any other iPods as I installed it onto my 80GB iPod Classic and 8GB 3rd Gen Nano no probs.

I just seems that new songs may now be Fairplay Version 2 so either Apple or a third party (music industry) are almost forcing any iPod Touch owner to purchase the 2.0 update if they want to play the songs.

To be honest I didn't mind paying £5.99 for the update but I know there are a lot of people out there that are not able to get the update with it not being on their iTunes store in their country due to legal reasons etc. possible the songs in that country will not be encoded with Fairplay.

i still don't get it, sorry.

If Apple has released a new version of FairPlay on the world, and one iPod (the newest of them, in fact) needs to have an upgrade to play the music, how is it that my 3G iPod that has not had an update in over three years can play it? It surely was not updated with a DRM scheme that Apple just released when the last update came out over three years ago.

Maybe I'm being particularly dense, and I am in no way saying you are not getting this message, but I just can't make the logic work for this. I really wish I'd bought some music before I upgraded so I could have seen that.

So I'm doing a little research, and the first (and only on the first page) entry on Google is your post. Nothing else. And unfortunately, anything with both "Apple" and "2.0" in the search is now returning only iPhone hits.

Ah, here we go. I thought so. FairPlay version 2 has been around since at least iTunes 4.6 and a date of May 17, 2004. There is no new version of FairPlay in iTunes 7.7 (at least not version 2), that explains why I can use my 3G iPod. The following links are to threads on forums.

Stanv2 is the first poster, and the author of the appropriate title.

So, I'm not sure why it is acting like that. It is possible your iPod has become de-authorized. A simple restore could fix that without the upgrade.

Well I can't really answer that, all I know is that before iTunes allowed me to download the song I was asked to agree to the new terms mentioning requiring 2.0 on iPhone/ iPod Touch, this was obviously before I had 2.0 downloaded or installed on my IPT.

Another thing that just came to me while doing a google search was possibly it was so much about fairplay version 2 on songs (as like you say its been around a while) and more to do with if you were installing new APPS which are DRM protected with fairplay 2 also, you do require 2.0 update to use the new APPS this sounds more like what it is to do with - maybe I got the wrong end of the stick from reading the T&C.

iTunes was acting funny with servers down etc. on Friday and the first time I tried to buy the song it would not allow me to do so before taking me to the T&C page then I could buy ok.

OK, that makes more sense. It sent me to the new Terms when I tried to download the eBay app to answer a question. That likely mentioned needing 2.0, because as you said it is required for the apps.

Wow, I was really ready to have to jump off the Apple Wagon there if I couldn't buy music for use on my older iPods. The touch is nice, but I need my 60GB for those week long business trips into the uncharted wilds of Louisiana where the only local station is some lonely, angry minister telling me that I am going to *ell. 😉

I am having issues w/ some new songs(only those with fairplay 2) playing on both my older ipods. I search most support discussions and can't find other like issues except with touch. All software is updated and when going to play the songs it just skips them. It will download onto the ipod, and will play in itunes but not on either portable.

Any help?
