No sound from TV speakers when Mac Mini is connected with DVI-HDMI cable

I have connected my mac mini to a sony bravia LCD tv with a DVI-HDMI cable, but the sound comes out of the computer speakers. How should I connect to get sound from the TV speakers?

mac mini, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

From what I just learned, the DVI part does not carry audio, so you'll need an audio cable - I believe it's called a Y cable, one mini plug on one end for the Mac and the regular red/white plugs on the other for the TV; that is if your TV audio input is analog. If it's digital, I believe you need a Toslink (but I'm not knowledgeable about that part). Check your TV manual to see what kind of audio ports it has; mine shows an input port for "PC/HDMI audio".

Hope that helps.

Many of the TVs understand this issue and support the audio thru another port. In my 26" Philips HDTV, I have to select audio input for HDMI port thru AV input or HDMI. If I select AV, then the audio jack from the mac mini needs to be connected to the AV1 input of my TV. So, I purchased a 3.5mm Stereo to Stereo RCA Jack cable and connected the headphone output of mac mini to my TV and voila, I had the audio playing back thru my TV. Other TV brands may have similar implementation, while some may not support computer input at all (this feature is called computer input by Philips).
