I'd sure like to know the answer to this as well. If you can perform the exact same functions from either icon, what's the point of having them both?
The ONLY think I can think of is that the clicking the Contacts icon will always put you directly into your list of contacts, while clicking on the Phone icon will take you to you last phone operation, which could be Recents, or VM, or something besides your Contacts. So, I guess the Contacts icon is a step-saver.
That's all I can think of.
