yes on point one.

on point two, not so sure i would jump to that conclusion. apple does not state "up to" when talking about resolution or frame rate and they do when they talk about audio sample rate. so i interpret that as meaning not up to (but exactly). also, when i encode with 640x476 or 29.97 fps (both of which would qualify as "up to" 640x 480 or "up to" 30 fps) they do not work. it was only when i changed it to exactly 640x480 AND exactly 30 fps that it worked. so , i will be using the exact settings.

clearly, i don't know exactly what is going on either, these are just my observations and things that seem to be working for me.

I think you've hit on one of the key points here, Chris, which is that SOME previously encoded files work, while others don't. I speculate that this is caused by differences in the source encoding, but I have to hard evidence for this. One thing I have not yet tried is converting a video that stopped working directly from itself, rather than from my original video source. I think if this failed it might support my speculation.

Again, Chris, I am refreshed by your perspicacity: these fixes do not address the problem of old movies that have stopped working. I ask if you've done what I have not: When you tested ntsc-film, was that on source material, or on a file that had stopped working?

Markian...

all my compressions are from original source material that I created in the course of my work. And although your theory that there is a difference in source material is a valid one I need to make it clear that in one case I had two files from the same project, same source size, same source frame rate and same workflow where one file worked on the phone and one did not.

and yes... when I tried the Visual Hub "ntsc-film" fix I always used the originally exported full res, self contained kick outs from the timeline... which is my preferred work flow. Yea it makes for some big files but because of the number and variety of deliverables I often have to create it saves time.

I think the problem is with Nero to resolve. I believe it has to do with Nero AVC profile found in Nero Recode. If I enable the "classic set of Nero Digital profiles" I am able to encode supported files which play on the iPhone. Profile category is Apple iPod, and profile is iPod (not iPod AVC). I've encoded files which work with other software, so no matter what may have changed with 2.0, seems Apple does not like Nero's AVC implementation.

I think I am having some of the same problems as most of you. I had several movies I encoded using ripbot. 1024k bit rate 640x360 128 AAC audio. They played great on 1.4 of the iPhone 1. I updated to 2.0 and I want to say they were playing just fine on it for a few days. Now all of the sudden they just stopped working with the "movie format not supported".... I also have some podcasts on the iPhone, which those play just fine. I have a couple of home movies i had made and converted, same settings same program and THOSE still work ok... They are definately on my phone, I am not having a problem with that. They still play fine in iTunes as well. Just last night, my phone was acting strange too. It was like it was stuck in headphone mode. No audio would come out of the external speaker, except the ringer/alarm, no music would play out of the external speaker. However, if you actually plugged headphones in, that would be just fine. I would pull the headphone plug out, and adjust the volume from the home screen, and it would still say "headphones" on it. Just as well, when i was in the ipod with the headphones plugged in and listening, that was fine. then i would pause the music, go to the home screen and unplug the headphones and the music would START playing. just the opposite of what it should do. I left the phone on the cradle all night, it played some music for a while. when i woke up in the morning, it was acting normal again, except the video part. Weird??? the phone has never acted like this, has to be something with 2.0 upgrade i think.

A little more info.... After some troubleshooting last night I was able to determin(at least for me) this... It seems to depend on the program doing the encoding that has issues, maybe a setting or something, i cant figure it out. i used ripbot, which only does h264 and nothing worked. tried progressive, interlaced, dropped the resolution, even used level 1.0 compression, nothing worked. i used DVD magic on a dvd and it worked just fine. made a clip of a movie in h264 and mp4 and both worked just fine, at 640x360 and 1024 non the less. so it seems there is something 2.0 doesn't like about some particular encoders. dont know what it could be thou. I think i used videora on my home movies and those work fine too. Maybe someone else can play around too and maybe we can isolate which programs dont work and maybe there is a common setting wrong. (remember the iphone 5g video id setting)..

I'm pretty certain this issue is a software issue...

I've had the same thing but its totally sporadic... there's not pattern of bad playback, sometimes the movie will play, sometimes it wont, and its the same file.

I would suggest, making sure the sync actually completes.

DONT sync through a USB hub... (yes I know this sounds dumb, but the Apple Genius told me this can sometimes corrupt the files...?!!) If that is true or not i dont know... but hey, its worth a try...!!

Also, if you are on a MacBook Pro, make sure you only use the RIGHT USB port, and the LEFT port has known issues with the iPhone 3G.

I really don't have anything constructive to submit at the moment, but I must say I'm really ****** off at Apple for doing this, if this problem is solved by them in two weeks, I'm giving up all my iPods and boycotting these people.

They really don't want us to import our own media, no these corporate pigs need to make sure that they're always getting a slice of the pie.

I had the same issue with some of my Videos that were converted using Visual Hub. Once I upgraded my iPod Touch to 2.0 they stopped working. I eas confused at first as all of the the ones that still worked were in 4:3 aspect ratio. Anyway after trying many different solutions and settings. I found that if I used ffmpegX instead of Visual Hub to encode I had no problems with any of the resulting my videos-both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio and different frame sizes.

I believe the issue is that 2.0 is stricter about the encoding of h264 video and that is why some of those are broken and others aren't. iSquint and Visual hub need to update their settings for iPhone and iPod Touch and then things will be fine. Nero to for PC need to patch their settings.

Apple are not going to go back so there is no point at shouting at them. The new videos are more responsive than the older versions that stopped working. They had been a little buggy during playback. I guess this was because the weren't using the right settings.

If you have a lot of video you can batch process them in ffmpegX. Sure you will lose a little quality but beats ripping them from scratch.

FfmpegX is free but if you find it useful then support the developer. I often use when all other apps fail.

Work around for Nero 8 was to revert to classic iPod settings and recode stuff at much lower resolution. I prefer to convert using the higher res iphone AVC settings but these just don't work.

While not wishing to provoke the ire of the Jobsian masses, it really is poor coding by Apple. The only reason I can see for it is that it's nothing to do with video settings and everything to do with rights management. How else can you explain a previously encoded iPhone AVC file at DVD quality working fine, because I had previously played it on the iPod Touch, while a file I had encoded 6 months ago at the same time in the same batch but not watched failing with the not supported message.

I've raised a suggestion with Apple and would ask that others do too. Maybe it'll push it up the fix list, maybe not. I'll maybe raise it with Applecare too, more in hope than expectation.

Regards to all,

CP

Personally I'm quite disappointed.
I'm new to this Apple stuff and I always eas told, Apple would be way better then Microsoft. I'm not so sure anymore.

I have a lot of mpeg2 clips and tried to convert them with Quicktime.
So I had to buy the mpeg2-addon first. Done that only to learn, that a mpeg2-clip which plays well in Quicktime, cannot be converted to iPhone-Format due to missing audio-Tracks.
How can Quicktime play a clip with Audio and missing it for converting.

Solution at the Moment. First convert the mpeg2-clip with mpeg-streamclip to Quicktime-Format and after that even Quicktime can find an Audio-Track for converting. 😟
