Backing Up iphone?!!??! every time i connect?

So I got to activate it and sync it finally today. I noticed that every time i plug in the phone. Itunes says "Backing up iphone" and I have to wait until its done backing it up before it starts syncing any new things. Is this normal or should I do a clean restore and start from scratch? PLEASE help.

This is directly off of Apple's website ( http://www.apple.com/iphone/tips/):

"Once iPhone has been configured to sync with a particular computer, iTunes automatically makes a backup of iPhone on that computer when you sync. iTunes won’t automatically back up an iPhone that is not configured to sync with that computer. If you have configured iPhone to automatically sync with iTunes on a specific computer, iTunes will back up iPhone every time you connect it to that computer. Automatic syncing is turned on by default. iTunes only makes one backup each time you connect, even if you sync multiple times before disconnecting."

Nice Gesture, I wonder what they will offer to those of us with real problems?

In anticipation of the App Store I purchased AU$250 of iTunes Credit
I have only spent $75 and then had to delete half my apps to make performance slightly less unbearable.
I kept the paid ones and my experience is still crap. At best, hours daily of being unable to use the phone even for it's main function (It appears a call can be received during sync, but outgoing calls and sms cannot be made, also I cannot relax and play a game or explore the apps during a sync)

Apple, I have resorted to carrying TWO phones since Sunday the 13th

Phones are essential devices. While waiting to collect my wife at 9:30pm last night I played a couple of 'safe'* games and the phone crashed to the white apple. Suddenly I faced the prospect of not being able to contact or be contacted by her late at night.
Fortunately the phone came to life after 3 or 4 minutes and I had the backup phone, but really this is unacceptable.
*paid games like Cromag Rally which haven't crashed for me before

I have been a Mac user for 20 years, work at an Apple Reseller and even own shares, but instead of the planned 16GB phone for my wife and replacing my 8GB with a 16GB I am seriously considering returning the phone I have for a refund.

Yes, I queued early to buy two 16GB iPhones Pre-Paid on the 11th, but I could only get One 8GB with the idea to sell it and get the two 16GB when they become available.

I knew about cancelling the backup. It means that auto sync is not auto at all because I have to enter my screen saver password and cancel backup. At least if I don't want 2 hours to pass before my sync actually occurs.

I have still been experiencing at least 1 hard crash every day since I last posted and several soft crashes (where a hard crash dumps me to the white apple and a soft crash to the home screen)

Fortunately leaving the phone for at least 3-5 minutes seems to be enough for the restart to occur.
It is even possible (with the exception of my first hard crash, which lasted for hours) that I was just not waiting long enough before I restored the phone?
Regardless, this device should not be crashing to the home screen or completely restarting on a daily basis.

I don't expect Apple to make any noise until they have a fix. My experience was the same when I suffered through hundreds of hours of grief with the G5 Freeze Issue.

Update.....

Still crashing daily

At least it seems there is some knowledge of this bug out in the wild

" And there’s a bug in the new iPhone operating system that causes apps to crash, and can even force the iPhone or Touch to reboot, if you use a large number of the new apps in quick succession. Apple says it is working on fixing the latter problem."
Cut and Pasted from Walt Mossberg at the link below which in turn was found from Apple's own 'Hot News' page

http://solution.allthingsd.com/20080722/a-shopping-trip-to-the-app-store-for-you r-iphone/?sr=hotnews

Which, of course, makes it most frustrating when demonstrating to friends and colleagues

"Look what my new iPhone can do....that's right. it can crash"

Even the App store itself was crashing on me today.

Update:

Still getting regular daily crashes of the apps, including pre-installed apps like maps and even, a few days ago, settings.

Last night while browsing the phone seemed a little flaky and a click on a new app icon gave no response other than a flash followed by even more flaky behaviour.

I powered off the iPhone using the power button and red slider after which there was the white apple of death all night until the battery ran out.

This morning I plugged in the iPhone and the red battery appeared followed by the white Apple.
After 20 minutes I decided it was time for a full restore.

I haven't bothered to backup for weeks due to the issues there and haven't synced for several days, so I have lost photos, map locations and a bunch of important notes.
I am also losing time writing this entry and since I don't expect the restore to be complete before I go to work In an hour I will be forced to take a different phone and sim card and will not be available on my usual number.

Man I have to say these are horror stories. I had a similar issue with a phone I found somethings that may help. First off you should do some house keeping on your mac. Go to /Applications/Utilities and run Disk Utility. Once inside "repair permissions" This may fix some issues related to the backing up as well as issues re: time machine backing up everything every backup.

Once you have done that plug your iphone into your computer, when itunes launches cancel the synch. Right click your iPhone and click on Backup. This will take a while as its doing a fresh backup. Once finished run a synch. Reboot your mac and see if your backup time improved.

Backup corruption is another issue. If you had a previous iphone or upgraded to 2.0 for some reason your backups started prior to 2.0 will not work and will report as being corrupted. As a preemptive measure in iTunes delete all your backups under preferences then syncing. Once thats done do what I said above, this should restore you to a usable backup.

Went through the process of restoring and upgrading to 2.0.1 spent half of the morning without my contacts and then experienced the blank setting page this evening.

Turned off using the power button and red slider then experienced the white apple of death again.

Drove to pick up my daughter 8km away with the white apple there the whole time. Heaven forbid I should break down or have an accident.

Restoring Now. I'll be lucky if I don't soon toss it at the wall.

Restore looked like it was going to be finished quickly but stalled at about 95% for 2 hours.
I pulled the cable and the phone was unresponsive, but worked normally after a few minutes.

A few apps were missing, but other than that all seems fine.
It even seems that some things like icon positions that I haven't backed up yet have been remembered.

I think it more likely that it partially completed before I cancelled backup during this mornings sync since the sync I am currently running took only 2 minutes to backup.
Perhaps while it appeared to be frozen it was actually installing apps?

iTunes also started to access the store and download updates to apps during the sync, which I don't remember seeing before.

Syncing is now in progress, but taking a while due to apps which need to be installed.

Lets hope that the sync/backup process is now fixed.
At least then a major crash can be more easily recovered from.

Nope!

Slow as ever.

Just that I didn't have my music on yet.

Apple.
I would like a check box 'do not backup music files'
and another 'do not back up apps'

The disadvantage is I might have to download or rip the apps or songs again, but the fact is they all exist on internal and external backup drives anyway. Plus Apple have a record of all purchases and I have the CDs of all my songs.

Contacts and app data are harder to recreate. I don't know why, but I originally assumed this was going to happen wirelessly.
