Why does my new 3G say "ATT E: at the top and not 3G?

Earlier at work my new 3g said "ATT 3g" and it was zippy fast. But now i noticed here at home, only 5 miles from the office, its saying "ATT E" at the top and its very slow. Does this mean the 3G is down?Or that I don't have enough signal here? I had no idea I would default back to the old slow Edge net? Arghhhhhh!!!

MacBook Pro / iPod Touch, Mac OS X (10.5.1)
