iPhone 3G Accelerometer

Does anyone agree that changing the view in safari is more jerky than previous iPhone? iTunes seems smooth enough as does the photo gallery.
Or is ti possible that it is just my phone?
TIA,
John

Mine has the same issue in Safari. It only seems to happen on some sites though but I can't tell what would be causing one site to rotate more easily than another. In extreme cases it doesn't rotate at all or it won't switch from portrait to landscape until well after I bring it back to portrait. This will be an easy fix for apple to push through in the next couple of days or weeks, I am not too worried about it.

I'm having similar problems with the accelerometer on my iPhone 3g, as well:
1) jerky (screen rotation not as fluid as on my 1st gen iphone)
2) sometimes seems to get "stuck" in portrait or landscape (doesn't rotate appropriately when phone angle is shifted).
3) Sometimes screen rotates automatically counter-clockwise, even when the phone itself hasn't moved. Resetting (holding home + on/off button til phone shuts down) seems to fix this temporarily, but it recurs a few minutes into beginning to use any app that uses accelerometer (camera/photos/safari).

Any thoughts whether this would be a firmware issue or a hardware problem (especially #3 above), would be appreciated.

My accelerometer is also having problems. It works perfectly until the iPhone sleeps for 30 seconds or more - when it wakes the screen no longer rotates (in photos, safari, calculator, etc).

Accelerometer based games behave as if the top of the phone is pointing down to the ground (other motions still have an effect in these games though, so it seems to be just one of the 3 accelerometer axes that is reporting the wrong value).

Also, the camera app thinks I'm holding the phone upside down, so the photos are stored upside down!

A reset always fixes the problem. If I set "Auto-Lock" to never and don't press the sleep/wake button then the accelerometer works perfectly! Of course this isn't exactly practical..

Interestingly, if I sleep the phone for less than 30 seconds it comes back working fine (it must not quite have entered the actual sleep state yet).

If anyone else has similar problems then I'm hopeful a firmware/software update could fix the problem, otherwise I guess I'll have to get it replaced.

I am also having the exact same problem as DANPERTH.

I really hope this is a firmware issue that will be fixed soon. I really don't want to have to go looking for a replacement 16GB Black 3G model... as I'm sure they are VERY scarce right now.

How do replacements work through Apple by the way? Do they send the new phone in the mail and then when you receive it, you pack up the old phone and send it out in the same box the new one came in?

Hello

I have the exact same issue with my iPhone bought in Belgium. The accelerometer works from time to time. I need to reest the phone to make it work normally. Then after a few minutes it stops working. I guess it stops after the phone goes into sleep mode. I also hope this will be fixed by a firmware update.

Has anyone contacted Apple about this issue ?

Thanks for your help 😉

I also experience this issue and it does seem to happen after the phone sleeps sometimes as some have mentioned. I have the iPhone SDK and using one of the example apps that reports accelerometer output, the issue is that the X Axis starts reporting (what I would assume) is a false or incorrect value of around a constant -2.5. Y and Z axis continue to function normally.

When this happens it is possible to get the X axis to report movement, but it requires a pretty hefty shake.

Power off and restart always clears it up.

my accelerometer always thinks im in landscape mode, in safari, photos, games and calculator.

Its so annoying and i cant even get it to work temporaly like you guys. Games are a nightmare for me and safari going into landscape mode is really getting annoying. Photos i have to take them upside down to have a photo in portrait mode.

I got this iphone 3g 8gb model in mexico and i dont think costumer service will be as good as in USA so ill try to get a replacement on monday but i doubt it. At this point i dont think a firmware upgrade will fix my problem.
