[iphone] ad hoc distrib

ok... so the ad hoc distrib is supposed to be for beta testing, etc. one problem, you have to collect all the device id's and manually add them to make your provisioning profile... well... that makes it tricky to conduct a wide beta, but ok...

so now... i want to make it super easy on anyone willing to help me out and beta test my code... unfortunately, i have to ask them to give me the device id... well, now, where do they find that... i can see device id in xcode, but i'm not gonna ask the average user to download xcode (average user is a good group to beta test with, no?). i looked in the docs and it says it can be found in itunes, but itunes doesn't seem to have it, on the "serial number".

am i missing something?

also, i apologize if this has already been covered, but as search is disabled right now, i can't search through the forum.

I believe it says they have to click on the "Serial Number" label and it will then show the Device ID.

thx so much... apparently, i can read IM, forum messages and email, but not directions.

now... i hope there is an answer for this... when i did that in itunes, i see the ID, but i cannot select it to copy/paste... what is apple's deal with copy/paste these days...

so now... if i'm running a large scale beta, i gotta convince each user to:

1. open itunes and connect iphone
2. click "serial number" label
3a. type out (make sure not to typo or transpose or i'll burn up one of my 100 devices) the 40 character id into an email
or
3b. ask them to screen shot it and send it.

on my end, i need to:
1a. create a new device and either type in the serial number from the image
or
1b. copy it from the email
2. add the device to the provisioning profile.
3. send the provisioning profile to the user to load into itunes.

i'm guessin there has got to be a better way. the next app i'm working on needs a really big beta test (at least 50 users) to be successful... hopefully by the time i'm done, this will all be worked out.

that is cool... but i think that stuff is more for an "enterprise" deployment. it looks like you setup all the device settings... such as exchange account info, etc.

what i'd like to see is something to make it easy for someone to send me their iphone id and allow me to add that to my provisioning profiles.

better yet, can i just pass out the app, then when the 100th one is installed, it stops working.

I am in a similar situation with trying to get three other guy's iPhone ids so I can include them in an ad hoc provision. I know you can't copy and paste the id from iTunes but once you click the serial number over to the ID I was going to have them take a screen shot and email it to me. Hopefully I wont mistype.

My problem is just getting to load the app via iTunes like they suggest. Have you successfully loaded an app onto your personal iPhone using the AD HOC distribution? If so, what's the secret.

Thanks,
Sam

Actually its a little easier than that. It seems that if you Copy in iTunes on the Summary page for a device, it copies the value displayed in the Serial Number/Identifier row, even though you haven't selected any text.

That being said, I know my UDID is right in my Ad Hoc Distribution profile, but I'm getting the same error.

I am getting the same Error. while trying to install the distribution from iTune.

Some guys said you can't in stall distribution app to development machines.
But I have email it to a firend for testing and he got the same error.

Meanwhile, in iPhone program portal, several distribution note are not accessible. I hope they are updating them.

same error - using a non-development iphone. One thing I noticed is that if I go to the distributions panel, click on ad hoc page the profile is listed - then if I click on edit - modify it brings up a page showing the distribution parameters; however, the "ad hoc" radio button is not checked, but rather the "app store" (even though I checked ad hoc when creating it. So I'm wondering if thats just a bug in how it displays or if somehow its stored not as ad hoc. I guess there's no way to look at the actual profile file itself to determine.
