Signal Strength: New iPhone vs. Old iPhone

Hello,

I was one of the 1st in line at the Cherry Hill store in NJ. Bought a 16/black and activated my old iPhone to my wifes number. Both are running great under 2.0. The only problem is, the old iPhone has 5 bars of signal strength and the new one has 2. One is in my left hand and the other is in my right. Any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

what it probably is that the 3g signal strength isn't as strong as your 2.5g signal which you original iphone is using, 3g masts don't have as much signal strength as the standard ones do.

try switching the 3g off on your new iphone 3g and you should see that both phones have the same signal

i use to work for o2 in the and have seen it before with other mobile phones

That is ridiculous if the user needs to manually switch between 3G AND EDGE if/when the 3G signal is weak--to get better reception! Really! The phone should intuitively detect that...

So, now when you see you've got little to no signal you start switching to edge in hopes of a better one???

"Can you hear me now?"
"No? Hold on..."
"Can you hear me now?"
"Oh you can hear me now. Good. I had to switch over to edge..."

Good Grief!
Seriously, Can you hear/feel me now?!

I am sorry but i am missing something here??On my old sonyericsson there were to line of bars, one for the internet 3G and one for the network to make phone calls.
I think on the iPhone the bars indicates the strenght of the signal for the phone call, nothing to do with the network being that 2G or 3G.

I am also very disappointed with Apple, i was hoping to read feedback her praising the signal strenght.... i was waiting for the 3G to get a phone that actually could be used as a phone as well as internet, e mail etc etc....
looks like i will keep my old iPhone for the time being....

Hey Mosher

Thanks for your advise as I have been reading this post and noticed that you say switch off 3G..Well I live in a Rural area in the UK where 3G is totally no-existent.

I love my radio and purchased the cool "Tuner" online radio App by Nullriver and it would totally not play any online stations whatsoever ,anyway I thought sure after reading your comment i'll switch 3G off and revert to EDGE just like my 1G iphone did and that worked well ,anyway after switching 3G off alltogether as I cannot recieve it where I am ....anyway the radio stations stream perfect without a single buffer or glitch and have been listening to one station now for 2 hour without any hiccup.

EDGE seems cool to me especially where I am.Oh by the way my phone has 3G off and WI-FI off.

Cheers

On the iPhone, in the top left corner, there is a signal bar for cell phone service. This ranges from 1-5 bars, and will have AT&T right next to it. No bars will show you a "No Service" message.

Next to this interface, you will have an E or a 3G symbol, depending on whether the iPhone can find these services (this isn't part of the AT&T phone service). These won't show up obviously with a "No Service" message, but sometimes, they may not even show up with 1-2 bars.

If you are getting another symbol, with curved lines going from top to bottom, top being longer than the bottom lines, this is the WiFi signal. It replaces E and 3G, because it's faster than E and 3G, and you have no need for those services when connected to WiFi.

Hope this clears up all confusion.
