iPhone Backup takes ages since 2.0

Since upgrading to 2.0 whenever I sync my iPhone in iTunes the backup process takes about 15mins however previously this would take just a few seconds. Any ideas why this might be? It seems like iTunes is trying to backup everything on the iPhone including all the media 10GBs worth? Is there an option to stop this from happening?

Thanks in advance!

as i am trying to upgrade my phone to the new 2.0.2 "bug fixes" upgrade which, as stated earlier in this forum, doesn't name which bugs they are fixing (homos), i decided to set the timer on my iphone to see how long the back up will take. it's already up to 1 hour and 25 minutes and i'm not even halfway backed up on the itunes backup bar. Ridiculous. I've tried to override the backup as i've done in the past just so i can upgrade, but you can't upgrade without backing up. this phone is becoming a joke. when i try to catch a picture of something, the camera takes a long *** time to load. joke iphone.

anyway, hopefully this upgrade will fix the bugs in the phone and not cause it to take so long to backup.

I think that if it only takes a few minutes to backup an iPhone with no 3rd Party Apps installed, then there should be an option in iTunes to only backup the iPhone OS and any settings related to the iPhone OS and the official Apple Apps (YouTube, Maps, Notes etc.).

At least then I'd be able to have a backup of Notes, Maps Bookmarks, YouTube Favourites, Wireless Networks, Weather Locations, Alarms and General Settings. I've had to restore my iPhone so many times now, I think I can write a book about it. I have found it to be much easier in the long run to just start from Scratch, I've had to reinput my notes and such so many times that I'm keeping a list of these settings in a TextEdit document and reinputting them on a fresh Restore of my iPhone, because of the problems I get when I try to restore from a backup, even a freshly made backup.

This backup problem is one of many with this device, but they all combine to make my iPhone experience very unpleasant to say the least. The only thing saving me from ditching my iPhone altogether and buying a cheap phone that works 99.9% of the time, is the hope that Apple are aware of all these problems and version 2.1 of the iPhone software will concentrate not on adding more bug-ridden features and solely on fixing the current situation of iPhones that randomly reboot to a never-ending Apple logo and backups that takes hours and hours, so when the reboot to a never ending Apple logo happens, you spend 3-4 hours restoring from a backup that is ultimately corrupt or gives a stupid error code that makes no sense to anyone outside Cupertino.

Personally I think that Apple need to write an App that provides management of my iPhone, and get rid of this reliance on iTunes to manage the iPhone. iTunes is a music App. That's it. It shouldn't be the home for my iPhone management. They need to write a brand new App called mYiPhone or something that allows backups, syncs etc. Then iTunes can be used for its' intended purpose - playing music and movies. Has anyone noticed that when you are restoring an iPhone, you cannot use iTunes at all until the Restore is complete. How utterly nonsensical.

Rant over. Bedtime. Goodnight everyone.

Backup and Install times seem to be affected then...

Take a look at the install times...

I noticed initially when I installed apps from my iMac to the iPhone it took:
5 seconds per app....
after 30 installed apps it took 60 seconds to install an app
after 90 installed apps it took 70 seconds to install an app
after 110 installed apps it took 75 seconds to install an app

The last app never installed, instead I got this unknown error (0xE800002d) go figure.
110 apps equaled to 324 MB... plenty of free space left.

No. And if you get an unexpected call, say hello to corrupt backup, or error on restore. Also, you shouldn't change it to airplane mode either....I've read several articles stating it has screwed up people's new phones when changing it to airplane mode during the process(I guess apple wasn't expecting people to do that). Thanks apple.

My take on the long back ups is the apps too. If you have been installing and updating the apps from the phone, itunes will transfer them from your phone to the computer which may be part of the problem.
After my phone crashed I deleted all app, and yes, like some I had lots. My back up is now less than 2 minutes. I did the restore, not a clean wipe and downgrade like some, but minus the apps my phone is much happier. And now, so am I, although I'm really ticked that I've spent 60 bucks + on a bunch of apps I'm afraid to use. Maybe the backups are long because of all the activity with the apps?

We really could use a 'time machine' approach to iPhone backups as each time I sync with iTunes it tries to backup my iPhone. The last backup took well over an hour to complete. As an added 'bonus' I was installing an app update from the app store (over the phone) and it froze solid, forcing me to do a restore. I found the most recent backup was worthless (corrupt) as it was.

Debbie-

Regarding purchasing of apps...one of my sources also says that with the 2.1 upgrade, apps will have to be redone in order to work on 2.1. You can see issues with this...like hoping that the developer develops it to be compatible with 2.1 especially if the app costs money, etc. I can just see this being a multiple topic posting in a month or so.

Up until I heard the above, I had no worried about the apps I was purchasing because apple keeps a record of purchased apps so you can just re-download for free.

Also, not sure if you have read this yet, but it explains why the long backups and such:
