Long Backup time during

I switched from an original iPhone to a 3G and now when I sync it seems to take a long time with the "backing up iPhone" part which can take 15 minutes or 30 minutes or longer just for that part.
Help

Apple needs to set it so only the databases and prefs are backed-up on the app side of the iPhone. There should be no reason for a full, long backup everytime the iPhone is connected.

I've also got a problem where my iPhone is saying it has 7.08GB of capacity and not 8GB, I can't remember if that's normal or not as I know hard drive specs always are higher than formatted capacity.

This the weird part. I have 5GB of content on my iPhone and the backup is 137 megs but with 1810 files in it so it is not backing up the whole which it shouldn't anyway. It seems to me that it should do a full the first time and incrementals or differentials after. It keeps using the same folder over and over again. I wonder if it is having all those apps. Like everyone else, I bet. I downloaded a ton of the free ones.

Baron, I agree with you. Why should iPhone want to back up everytime you connect the cable ? I mean all the data is on the computer anyway. My back up is about 2/3 done and I started about 3 hours ago !! If I'm lucky and get no phone calls to disturb it, I might get it done in about 5 - 6 hours !! it's ridiculous. I do hope Apple sorts this out. Otherwise I really like this phone.

I'll try that next time (clicking the "x") - but the point is the iPhone has never behaved this way in the past and if that's the "new" way, then a dialog should pop up or something to notify us that backups are optional if indeed they now take orders of magnitude longer to complete than they used to.

BTW, I would post this to Apple as a bug, but that's a waste of time since they NEVER, EVER communicate the status of what you submit and everything I have posted in the past (e.g., cut & paste capability) has been blown off.

The more apps you add the longer it gets...I erased all apps and my backup is 3seconds...before it was 2hours...If you add apps one by one and unplug and plug back in and sync it will back up again getting longer and longer with each app...
It is really messed up because all the apps combined are a very small amount of memory, yet it takes forever...Something is obviously screwed up!
