Does anyone else have this going on? Maybe I missed the thread.

Did you let it complete a full backup? I had this problem after going with with 2.0 because I never let it fully back up. It's stopped once I allow it to complete the long backup.

I've noticed that, too. Perhaps a setting in iTunes 7.7?
I sync so seldom that I don't expect it will matter to me.

I'm seeing the same thing. Before it reaches the various cycles of "syncing..." it goes through a somewhat prolonged "Backing up..." process that extends the entire process. I've gone through that cycle completely several times and it has yet to disappear. Is this a new "feature" and if so, is there an option to shut it off? On the surface it would seem to denote something beyond the sync with iTunes. Any additional input would be greatly appreciated!
Probably backing up data associated with the apps installed. I believe iTunes has always done a backup, but there's not been much to backup in that past, apart from settings, so it only flashed up the progress bar very briefly if at all.
Thanks SC... So are you seeing the same with your iPhone? I've installed a handful of apps and the backup process runs for about 30-40 seconds or so. Not an awfully long time, but enough so that it's a clearly noticeable change from the past.
It's not the apps - it's the music? Or perhaps some disk size threshold?
Anyway, after adding apps, I had cleared all the music off my device and it was syncing normally. THEN, I added my music back and it takes FOREVER!!!! This is definitely a "feature" that needs to be fixed - makes the device unusable.

Of course syncing your music will take forever but just let it do a full sync. Once it does that AND a full back up, the back up process won't take long when you sync the phone back to your desktop. It'll only sync the items that need to be synced. Anyway, hope this helps.
Yes. 10 or 20 seconds backing up. Maybe data from the apps is done every time?
Not completely true.
Yes, the first sync will take the longest amount of time and then future syncs will be faster, but with 2.0 the issue is that the backup that takes place before each sync is taking much, much longer than it did with iPhone software 1.x.
Apple AFAIK hasn't provided an explanation for this anywhere.

Please let me know if there is ever a answer to this problem. I cannot wait this long every time I update. Mine literally take 20 minutes. Every time. Something needs to be done.
Mine's doing the same too. A good couple of minutes each time I sync is spent 'backing up'. The only thing I can think of is perhaps personal data in downloaded apps is embedded into the app package file itself, such as highest score in a game, so it backs up the entire app file every time.
Would someone be able to elaborate?
It hardly makes it unusable, but it is a PITA.

luxem69,
How many photos in your camera roll?
Have you considered importing them to your computer, and then syncing them.
The backup backs up data that isn't normally synced with the computer, such as the camera roll, notes, SMS, call logs, network settings, etc.
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

Same thing here, it TAKES FOREVER, at least a few minutes to "back up" before syncing anything! frustrating...
My iPhone also backs up every single time it syncs now, and it is very annoying and time-consuming. =(
Me too; it spends over 15 minutes taking back-up
everytime I dock, followed by sync'ing music/calendar/photos/applications - actual sync is pretty quick as there's not much change on iTunes, but the back-up prior to that is what killing me. Never had this issue on 1.1.4.
Appears like a bug in 2.0 to me. Even when I haven't executed any app on iphone(meaning there can't possibly more data generated on iphone) since the previous back-up, it still backs up. Take the phone off the dock, dock back, it repeats the same annoying thing - pure waste of my time.
I unhooked the dock from USB and hooked to wall-charger directly to avoid this for now.

Why is iPhone backing up everytime I sync now?
