Error -5000 when attempting to backup iphone for 2.0 version

I'm attempting to download 2.0 to the original iphone. I'm receiving this message: "An error occurred while backing this iphone (-5000). Would you like to continue to update this iphone without the backup/"

I can't find any info on this site about the nature of this error message. Is it safe to proceed? I've backed up my pics and contacts online, so what would I lose if I move forward?

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Wish I had found this discussion before I did this:

Not having too many songs, ringtones, videos, audio, etc. I trusted to my most recent sync for contacts, calendar, etc. and chose to continue after this error. I'm now stuck with a progress bar for "Restoring iPhone software..." on my laptop and a nice silver apple and the spinner on my iBrick, which now reminds me of an ever-spiraling circle into ****.

Any suggestions?

I got this same error and none of the other suggestions seemed to work. I decided to go for the restore option but I have already lost all contacts on my iphone once and didn't want to go through this again.

I synced my phone so that I had everything current, then decided to sync my contacts to another place as well - just in case. When I did this - to google - then started the update for the phone software, low and behold it began to install the software to the phone!

I think the issue for me was that it needed a password to yahoo to sync the contacts and for some reason wouldn't ask for it. I have had this problem in the past - only itunes would tell me I didn't have an internet connection. Well I knew that was wrong because I had just been on the internet. Apparently itunes doesn't retain the password.

Hope this helps someone else. I think the 5000 error simply means "We don't know what the heck went wrong but something is screwy. ***** to be you!"
