Video Fast Forward/Rewind weird after upgrade

I upgraded to 2.0 this morning (after experiencing the same issues everyone else had yesterday). Everything went well, thank goodness, but I have noticed what I hope is a bug a not a new "feature".

When I use the fast forward while watching a video, before 2.0, it would go double speed with sound for a few seconds, maybe 10 or 15 seconds, then it would drop the audio and move faster, something like 10 seconds at a time.

However, after upgrading to 2.0, FF and RW while watching a video the picture just sorta freezes, the audio gets really weird and it's practically impossible to tell where you are in the video until you stop holding the FF or RW button. Either way you try to go its very choppy and strange.

Anyone else have this issue? Is this a bug in the 2.0 firmware or simply a new (MUCH worse) way of implementing the FF/RW feature? It's very very frustrating as video is probably my primary use of the Touch.

Also, note, the videos I am using are ones I've encoded myself using iSquint or VisualHub, not ones purchased from iTunes directly (why buy videos I already have on DVD?).

Anyone have any ideas?

I noticed the same thing about the scrubber as well. This is pretty annoying, but I guess it's minor comapred to some of the problems others seem to be having, so I guess for the moment I'll count my blessings that my upgrade went okay and I'm not having some of the horrible problems others seem to be having. Guess we'll see if they do something to correct this sometime soon. Thanks for your response. I was starting to think I was the only one affected by this.

This happened to me as well. The fast forward and rewind functions are terrible after upgrading. Since I primarily use this for video I forced it back to 1.1.5, unfortunately I lost all the apps from the Jan Software Upgrade and get an error when it tried to reinstall. So either deal with the awful fast forward/rewind or lose google maps, mail etc as apple knows about the issue with no solution yet. Still no reply from Apple on the fast forward/rewind issue, it's been almost 24 hours.

Same here with this issue on video podcasts downloaded from iTunes store. Plus with some video podcasts 'CNET TV Live' the audio gets horrendously out of sync (>5mins) if you even touch the fast forward or use the slider.

I would like to downgrade until this is solved, but need to get confirmation from Apple that:

a) They will refund my $9.99 or give me a credit for upgrade when they fix this.
b) They can explain how to get the mail/maps Apps back that I paid for before if I drop back to 1.1.4.

Peeved by the newly changed rewind and fast forward functions.

The new fast forward is annoying enough but the audio effect when rewinding makes you think twice about doing it, lol. It really is an assault on the ears.

Anyway in addition to the loss of decent time management on video has anyone noticed we've lost thumbnail chapters?

Adding Blade Runner to my iPod, I was pleased to discover small thumbnails on the chapter menu. It would take a short time to load all the thumbnails but it was a nice little feature. Hoped they would make it faster, if anything, in 2.0

So it's a little surprising to see it gone altogether. Anyone else miss this feature or just me?

So I gave up on getting my apps back and went back to 2.0. Then I noticed a new iTunes, I was hoping a new software update would be availbe but there wasn't one. Then earlier this week 2.0.1 came out and to my utter shock hey did not fix the probelm with rewind and fast forward. I hate the way the fast forward and rewind works I want Apple to fix thkis.

Here's a thing:

unfortunately, it's not the iPod touch/iPhone 2.0 software that is causing this... It's actually the video encoding

iPod touch/iPhone 2.0 has new playback system that is causing a video encoded with 3rd party encoding software (not the one from Apple, but other software's iPod compatible h.264 encoding system such as iSquint) to go haywire when fastfowarding or rewinding a video....

I had issues with some of my home movies, encoded via iSquint, playing on my iPod after upgrading to 2.0, but after re-encoding it with Quicktime Pro, (yes, I converted the ORIGINAL file to h.264 via Quicktime Pro) all my video playback smoothley.

So, it's not a software issue, it's the video encoding issue....

I must disagree -- the problem IS with the iPod Touch/iPhone 2.0. The fact that the built-in video player software cannot correctly Rewind/FF/Scan through a properly encoded video, while plenty of other players have no problem doing so, would seem to point to a failure on the part of Apple to provide a proper upgrade. Especially since the pre-2.0 version had no problems with the same video. This is definitely a 2.0 bug in need of a resolution.

I agree. The 2.0 update definitely has a bug in regards to video fast forward. It was always smooth on 1.1.4 and since update, when you fast forward the audio and video is so choppy and out of sync you have no idea how far you have moved forward. I use my ipod touch for video 95% of the time, so I noticed straight away. Please address in Bug fix as soon as possible.

I think the iPod firmware has a glitch or "feature" with the video encoding it likes and the video encoding must be compatible. I know the encoding definitely makes a difference. Not sure if its the framerate, format or what, but I tried Corel DVDCopy 6 Plus, what it encodes FF and REW perfectly smooth with smooth audio to match. Must use a similar encoder to Quicktime Pro.
