I share Clive's frustration! I purchased Tiger software at the end of last year with plans to update my computer, only to later learn my G4 was not compatible. Grr! My bad for not be computer literate!

But, when I went to update my iTunes and subsequently tried to sync my iPod during the last week of June (before this wonderful mobileMe plan was supposed to take effect July 1), my entire iPod was erased. Yup. Not able to restore/reset because it's an older model iPod. Color me frustrated with Apple on this one!

Now, web e-mail has vanished!

Add the annoyance that Apple only gave a month's notification that it was discontinuing existing services in order to streamline its offerings.

My Mac membership is paid through February 2009.

What gives?

A company telling consumers they're business is only welcome on Apple's terms?

Have you checked the economy?!

Unfortunately, I am not in a position to go out and purchase the latest gadgets on a whim. I have a budget that I need to abide by. Am I alone?

Sorry to get off topic. But, I needed to vent!

Any help in at least accessing my web e-mail would be greatly appreciated.

I share the frustration - I am a Panther OSX user too.

You can access www.me.com and log in with a Panther OSX Mac but you will need to upgrade to Firefox 2 browser before you can log in.

Now here is where Apple unfortunately made a bit of an error.

First -Apple's links to FireFox 2 - link to FireFox3 which is NOT compatible with 10.3 Panther OSX (and require 10.4)

Second -A lot of the tech support people at Apple I spoke with initially told me that it was too bad and that I needed to upgrade my OSX to get back in to my migrated .MAC account (now .ME).

The secondary advice is just wrong. I final spoke with a really nice and smart guy at Apple who could see that indeed the link to Fire Fox 2 was wrong and that indeed Fire Fox 2 can be run on Panther. He found a web link for me that contained Fire Fox 2. Sorry I don't have that link, but trawl the net and you should still be able to get a download.

Within minutes of install Firefox 2 - I was back in business and could access via the web my .ME account.

Hope this helps
Best

John

Hi, all. Here is the download page for Firefox 2:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

It isn't easy to find. The fact that Apple provided links not to v. 2 but to v. 3 may be the result of Firefox's own website deveoper changing what was a working link to FF2 so it now goes instead to FF3. Yes, Apple should update the link now that the problem has been identified, but in the meantime, use the URL above.

I have an iBook G4, OSX 10.3.9 and had Firefox 2.0.0.9 installed before the mobileme change. I downloaded a Safari update to accommodate mobileme, now my Safari doesn't work, my Software Update doesn't work, my Apple Mail doesn't work, and I can't get into my .mac mail either. I can't even find a "Log In" link.

When I downloaded the Safari update I emailed Apple support for help but they were slow to respond and didn't give adequate info. when they did.

I think it's unfair to pay for .mac and then have to pay for a lot of updates. I paid to be able to access my .mac mail for a year and now I can't without paying more.

What can I do to access my email and get my Software Update, Safari, and Mail programs to work?

Hi, Gretchen. No version of Safari later than 1.3.2 will run in Panther, and it's a bad mistake on Apple's part that the Safari 3 installer is perfectly willing to run and install an incompatible version of Safari on your unsupported OS version. I suspect all the other problems you mention may be due to changes in the support files that Safari and several other applications use, which the Safari 3 installer has deleted or replaced with incompatible versions.

If you don't have your hard drive backed up in the form of a bootable clone that was made before you applied the Safari upgrade, you may need to repost in the Safari forum area to ask how to recover from the erroneous installation of Safari 3.

I can't give you any advice at all about MobileMe; I know nothing about it. But I know you can download and use for free several other web browsers that are substantially newer and more up-to-date than Safari 1.3.2:

Opera 9.51.4886
Camino 1.6.1
Firefox 2.0.0.15

These all run in Panther.

I am running OSX 10.3.9. Like others I cannot get access to my mail and I am STEAMED! I just renewed my .mac account in April with no notice that they would cut me off 3 months later. On Apple's "Transition FAQ" they say that Email using Panther will "continue to work." But they don't say how to access it. I do have Firefox 2. Can someone provide simple directions how to get to my mail?

I cannot get into my .mac mail!
