While making a phone call, when I take the phone away from my ear, the screen goes blank and I cannot end call or see call waiting - finally the screen comes back to slide to unlock, and the phone call is ended.
Petshows, since getting my 3G last Friday I've been plagued by the same problem. It's been so chronic I suspected a fault in the iPhone itself. My first gen unit never exhibited this behavior so I was on my way to the Apple Store tomorrow to report it to the techs at the Genius Bar. But...
...I'm now convinced that Nathan C. has identified the source of the problem. I use a DLO brand "Jam Jacket" I bought for my original iPhone. It has little cut outs at the top for the position of the proximity sensor and the earpiece. I now suspect that either the 3G proximity sensor is less sensitive or its position is slightly different from the first model and it isn't aligning properly any more.
To test out Nathan C.'s hypothesis, I made a call long enough for the 3G screen to go dark. Lifting it away from my ear, I verified that it was not waking up as it should. I then flexed the upper part of the Jam Jacket's case to reposition the proximity sensor cut out and VOILA! the iPhone screen wakes and I can press the Hang Up button as usual. Now my only issue is whether to modify the cut outs and continue using this case or buy one that avoids the source of the problem.
I've had this blank screen problem several times in the 24 hours I've had my 3G and I'm glad to find an answer to my problem. I am using my original iPhone case (which I love!) with my new 3G iPhone.
How can I find out
exactly where the proximity sensor is? I tried the iPhone User Guide, but no help there. I'd like to modify my beloved case, but I don't want to be cutting unnecessarily.
Can you be more specific on the location of the proximity sensor. My case has two holes on the top front. One is positioned directly over and is the same size as the speaker. The other is above and longer than the speaker hole. It is either not in the right place or needs to be bigger or longer.
I was able to access the specs page without any registration. And it was exactly what I needed. Now I'll be able to modify my wonderful (pink) case. Thanks.
I'm curious about what the ALS is. According to the schematic it's a little dot to the left of the proximity sensors.
Thanks for all the help, Nathan. I have successfully modified my case and I can now end a call without taking my phone out of the case! I can once again use my phone normally. Thanks again.
Cool I have the same case & same problem can you show a picture of what you cut out ... Or email me the picture @ jepito (at) glasgow-ky (dot) com < Edited by Host >
i thought this phone was jacked up - i would have to drive 200 miles to a apple store 😟 just a picture of a moded Jam Jacket would be great ... Thanks Kevin
I had the same problem, my issue was the case I was using. There is a sensor where you put your ears at and if that is blocked is screws everything up. Try it without the case and hold your finger up to it the screen will go black and if you take your finger off the screen appears. Hope this helps..
Hey, i'm having the same issue and i think we have the same case. Could you send me a picture of your case in hopes i can modify mine also.
Thanks-
Adam
