iPhone 3G Version 2.0 home button not working instantly when pressed

Hello,

Does anyone experienced on their new iPhone 3G's Home button not responding right when pressed? When I pressed the Home button it doesn't turn on the screen like should. But when I pressed it again and held it a little longer, the screen turns on.

I reset my iPhone and then now it turns on in an instant when pressing the Home button. It sounds like it's the 2.0 software causing the problem. Earlier, after pressing the Home button and the slide lock appears it usually plays an unlock sound. At times it didn't play the unlock sound until I reset the iPhone by turning it off and then back on.

Apple may still have some bug bashing to do with their worldwide rollout of the 2.0 software. Please fix this Apple! Thanks!

I've been experiencing a similar problem.
I activated my iPhone 3G this morning and from the first attempt, my home button didn't function at all.
Even after restoring via iTunes, the button remained dead.
So in my case it hasn't functioned once.
For me this looks like a hardware problem.
I will return it to the apple store tomorrow, hoping for a replacement, rather than sending it off for repairment ...

If anyone experienced the same problem, and has found a solution, please let me know ...

Same problem here, among others. Sort of wish I waited on this one. It won't charge with my factory car kit because they removed the Firewire charging capabilities - with the 2.0 software, the phonebook is pretty slow. So far I am pretty disappointed with the 3g... but as soon as they address these problems, it seems like it will be pretty nice.

OK Please try this I think I've found what the deal is with this slow responding home button/ slow laggy iPhone 2.0 software.

Here is what I have and what I have tried. My old is an iPhone 8GB w/ 2.0 (5A347) and my new is a White iPhone 3G 16GB w/ 2.0 (5A347).

Go to your Settings>General>Network and Disable 3G. I also Disabled WiFi as well to just test both iPhones old and new on EDGE.

With EDGE enabled and 3G Disabled my new iPhone 3G responds super fast and the home button works fine going in and out of Apps. Still find it slow to respond from a black screen after being put in Stand By, but I can actually hear the unlock and lock sounds now. Haven't really tested different combinations of Disabling 3G but with WiFi ON and OFF.

So after discovering this I don't think it is a hardware problem so please don't rush into your nearest Apple Store or AT&T store to return your iPhone 3G. Just wait it out till the next update releases (hopefully very soon).

Hope this helps!

UPDATE: So after writing this post a few hours ago and playing with my iPhone 3G some more with WiFi ON/OFF and 3G ON/OFF I decided to just Enable 3G and turn on WiFi and be done with it. Surprisingly enough now my iPhone 3G works fine haha. I can hear the unlock and lock sounds and the home button responds fine in and out of Apps and from Stand By. What is going on? Hopefully my iPhone decides to stay normal. I think I may have exorcised the demons from it. I need a young priest and an old priest haha

UPDATE 2: I just can't seem to let this one go haha. Everyone knows the home button on the iPhone 3G is smaller and shallower compared to the old iPhone. I've also noticed now some things when I Wake the iPhone 3G from Stand By using the home button. If I press it fast it usually doesn't respond, and by fast I mean when pressed and depressed. If I hold it down even for a split second longer it wakes when depressed not when pressed. Different home button design mechanics?

I, too, am having issues with the home button. At first it worked fine. Then, earlier today, it started acting a bit laggy. Now, it's kaput. No response whatsoever from the home button. Tried doing the soft reset (hold down home + power) to no avail. Part of me suspects (and hopes) that it's software... (There has been no misuse of the phone. It was laggy before it failed. Others are having issues.) But I worry that it's hardware--e.g. bad soldering--which would be tragic, since getting a replacement with any urgency is an impossibility.

Hi,
I have the new iPhone 3G 8GB model, and have noticed lately little glitches/delays in response. For example, when scrolling through contacts, or sliding the unlock button, the phone very temporarily freezes up. Very frustrating as I'm used to operating quickly on my phone. Anyone else experiencing the same issues? Also, occasionally iPhone screen will just turn off when I move phone away from head to delete a voicemail. Takes about 30 seconds before screen turns back on. Strange. Thoughts and comments are much appreciated!

For those who were looking to return their phones, did you do so successfully? I've been thinking about doing that as well but don't know what they'll say at the store. Normally it's just that I have to press Home really hard or more than once to get it to work. The other day it wouldn't work at all. I was stuck on the favorites screen. I could shut the display off and on, but the home button didn't work. I was right by an Apple store and they asked me if I tried to reset it. Of course it worked after that but I don't want to have that happen. Reminds me too much of my old Treo! I also get a quick music skip from now on, which doesn't seem normal to me.
