Patience might be the simple answer (Win VISTA, ipod Touch, new iTunes).

OK. Having tried many things I simply plugged my ipod Touch into my Win VISTA machine and went away. I had a shower, made some coffee, did some housework. I came back and, to my surprise, the Win VISTA machine was backing up my ipod Touch in preparation for the v2.0 firmware download & upgrade.

This suggests Apple's servers may simply be swamped this weekend. Could be so given the July 11th release of the 3G iPhone in various countries.

Perhaps patience (waiting for perhaps 30mins or more) is the simple solution to avoid a lot of futsing-around time. Or the machine wants you to have a shower. 😉

OK, I know I'm replying to my own posting. I just thought I'd share the Win VISTA "upgrade experience" for an ipod Touch.

The backup phase of the ipod Touch took most of one hour.

Then followed various "Boops" and "Beeps" by the VISTA PC as it (I think) uninstalled, then reinstalled, the ipod Touch a couple of times. During that phase a message on the PC's screen said that new device driver software had been installed (I suspect some new version of Apple's USB driver). During all that the Apple logo was showing on the ipod Touch itself with the spinning "I'm busy" thingie at the bottom of its screen. The ipod Touch had clearly been shut down, then restarted, and I guess new OS software was being copied to it.

Then iTunes went into a restore-the-ipod phase (about 12mins).

Then it went into a verify-the-ipod-software phase (about 5mins).

Then there's a firmware restore phase (I forgot to time it).

And finally there's a restore of all the music, photos & videos. I suspect this too will take most of an hour (it's progressing as I write this).

There's an awful lot going on between the PC and the iPod Touch. It all takes a while (esp. the backup then the restore of the music, photos, videos). Patience by the user is indeed the key. The whole proceduree took around 2 hours, approx.
