I just attempted to make a copy of the contents in my smart playlist, so as to have a copy of all my music in case during upgrading to iTunes 6 anything happens. Im using DVD's to make Data discs and the first one burnt fine and then it told me to put in another DVD which I did, but then I got this 1771 error. I have tryed numerous times since to burn the songs that didnt make it onto the first disc, but keep getting the same error. I have tryed 3 brands of DVD's but I dont think that is the problem, as I have used the same brand for at least a year now. Please help!

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? Its driving me crazy!!!!!!
Did you ever learn how to resolve this? I'm assuming it has to do with some illegal character in a file name. Its solution is eluding me. Please let me know what you learned.

Yah, it was illegal characters. I just kept trying to burn it and narrowed it down to a few of the albums in the playlist. Finally I got it to burn by removing the suspect albums.
It sure is frustrating trying to narrow it down. Any notable characters other than the usual *, /, \, etc?
No, not really. I just took out anything that had any characters at all, and then it burned. Of course in the meantime I lost a few albums that Ill have to dig up again if my iTunes ever craps out on me. But it was better to burn most of the playlist, than none at all I guess.
Thanks for the assist Michael!

Michael,
That's an interesting error. 1771 is "File(s) could not be loaded (copied) into the virtual track image, because no file(s) were found." Which is very odd. I have not seen that one before.
Would it be possible for you to copy / paste the names of some of these problematic files here to the boards so that I could look at them? I'm interested in finding out which characters you were having problems with because I burn a lot of oddly named things and have never seen this.

I am having this error too....changing the characters has not helped.
Elsewhere, there have been discussions saying that .m3u (playlist) files might be at the root of the issue. Something about itunes isnt sure where to draw its info from, because the .m3u and the music files are in different places. I don't even use .m3u files.
Does anyone have ANY other ideas as to why this might be happening?

I am having problems creating a data DVD. At first I thought it was the type of DVD's I was using (DVD+R's); so I went out this weekend and purchased DVD-R's. The type of DVD's must not have been the problems since I kept getting the same error message (The attempt to burn failed. Error 1771). I know my DVD burner works because I created a movie in another program and burned it to a DVD. I'm convinced the problem lies with itunes but don't know how to fix it. I have itunes version 6.01 installed on my computer. I read the discussion string below find myself a bit confused. Can anyone please help?
I keep getting "the attempt to burn a disc failed" error 1771, when I try to burn discs of any size. I've been backing up my music and succeeded on my first few attempts and now nothing works, my laptop ejects it right after it reads the playlist and gives me that error message.
I've tried all of the ideas on this discussion thread and can't find one that works for me. I can use Nero, so it's not my CDRom drive, so I know it's within itunes.
Any thoughts?
