GPS can't find me!

I've read a few posts about GPS being weak or putting them miles away from their location.
However, mine just . . . plain doesn't work. I go on to maps (which I assume is the app for using GPS, unless i have to download another application? . . it's my first iphone) and click on the little button for finding where i am down the bottom left hand side, and its just loads . . . and loads . . and loads, and nothing comes to fruition.

Anyone else had the same problem or know how to fix this?

GPS found me!

I took the advise and tried it outside and it didn't work . . the next day, it just started working.
I'm not going to mark this as solved as I know others seem to have had the same problem.

My advise would be, don't just go out into the garden, get somewhere open, roads are also better than . . fields . .
Weird, but once it's found you, it's got you. Good luck with everyone else, if it starts working for you too, document for people to see here.

A purely GPS (i.e. not A-GPS) position lock can potentially take several minutes from a fresh start, so patience may pay off for many 🙂

A-GPS (assisted) uses the cell-tower network/listed wifi hotspots to help aid speed triangulation of positions (apologies if repeating earlier posted information).

I initially had problems with GPS, even standing outside. I tried altering settings for a few hours and even stood outside in the rain! The locater placed me on the island of Malta in the med, even though I'm in London. I called Apple support and they talked me through the reset procedures, still didn't work and while I was on hold for the specialist it started working out of the blue.

There does seem to be a 'glitch' that even if you are connected to a strong phone signal with 3G and wireless if it can't locate you rather than telling you this it defaults to a random location (in my case Malta). Would be useful if screen told you what was going on and if there could be a way to see how good the satellite lock is (like on other GPS devices).

To respond to some responses here. The usage of GPS depends on the device and your location. I've developed on devices which won't pickup locations from the middle of a wide open field. I was surprised at the iPhone's accuracy though (to pinpoint me while inside to within what looks like a few feet).

Anyways, I had a problem too where GPS stopped locating me. The cause was an application I downloaded through the AppStore. The application started locating and just kept spinning. Ultimatly I had to restore the iPhone and problem was solved.

If a hard reboot (hold menu + power for several seconds until the iPhone powers off and then the Apple logo appears) does not work, then try a restore. Any applications you have purchased from the App Store can be downloaded free as you've already purchased them.

Cheers,
