song info keeps reverting back to old version

when i imported mp3s into itunes, i changed the genre of the songs. upon playing the songs, however, they changed back to their original information. i tested changing artist, album, etc, and none of the changes would stay permanent -- a song's info would change either when i played it or selected "get info".
