Testing apps from XCode on your iPhone - developer program required?

Hello there,

Downloaded some of the sample iPhone apps. They run nicely on the iPhone simulator, but I can't get them to run on my connected iPhone (it's a new 3g iPhone, bought on launch a couple of days ago). I get the (infamous?) "Your mobile device has encountered an error (0xE8000001) during the installation phase: Verifying application". Some forum threads mentioned that I should change some keys to some value. I think I found those keys, and I think I changed them to the correct value, but still nothing. Someone also mentions checking the keychain for some keys, namely an iPhone developer key. Or something. It's usually very vague.

So, this leads me to conclude: Do I need to be in the iPhone developer program in order to test apps on my iPhone from XCode? Or is it something else? The error message from XCode isn't exactly helpful as of to understand what to do.

I apologize if I'm posting a dupe, haven't been able to find anything through forum search or google.

Yes - the only way to put code you yourself have compiled on your phone is if you've been accepted into the developer program and gone through setting up the required components. I feel your pain - I have a friend who's got code ready to post to the app store (after some final device testing, which he's about to break down and have me do for him) but isn't accepted, so is stuck in limbo. I'm sure he's not alone in that regard.
