Can't install iTunes on my PC

When trying to install iTunes + QuickTime, I get the message "The InstallScript engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available, please install the latest version of ISScript.msi, or contact your support personnel for further assistance." I installed the script engine using the site at ( http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q108 158&sliceId=1) and the version of iTunes that I'm trying to upgrade to, version 7.6.2.9. My current version is 5. After installing the script and trying to install iTunes, I get the same error message and the installation fails to complete. I'm running Windows XP with service pak 2.

Any help is appreciated. I can't use my new ipod nano until I resolve this issue.

The iTunes 5.0.x installers used a *version 11* InstallShield engine. Are you able to get the upgrade to go through if you install a version 11 InstallShield engine, as per the instructions down at the bottom of that InstallShield document?

If no joy there, here's another thing to try. The newer iTunes installers (for iTunes version 7.0.0.70 and above) are not InstallShield based ... so the InstallShield engine is only called on for uninstalling the existing iTunes 5.0.x (in your case). So if we can get your existing iTunes and QuickTime uninstalled, the installation of your new version iTunes version 7 should go through okay.

With that in mind, Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any iTunes and QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.

Next, we'll manually remove any leftover iTunes or QuickTime program files:

(1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.

(2) Open the Program Files folder.

(3) Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.

(4) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.

(5) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue.

(6) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.

(7) Restart your computer.

Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now?

ive downloded the installer version 8, 9, 10.5, and 11. i currently have version 11 still on. i was trying to update my itunes to version 8 but it wouldnt work cause i was missing the ISScript.msi on my computer. so i called apple and looked online everywhere. apple told me to uninstal itunes so i did, and i got rid of everything else and tried installing the installshield things. but now all i get is the version is older that the one needed instead of the message saying its missing. i can get quicktime, just not itunes. i hope this is all making sense.

hmmm, that sounds like you are installing over the internet. It's a good idea to choose "Save" instead of "Run" - that way you know the install fie gets downlaoded without errors, before starting the install.

+file cannot be read because it was made by a newer version of iTunes.+
If you're seeing that, then you have actually installed iTunes. It just can't read the v8 library file since you have gone back to v7.
Apparently you've gotten past the msi script error.

Go look n your itunes folder for a file named Previous iTunes Libraries.
See if you can *press & hold* the shift key, and choose one of those older ituneslibraries for v7 to use.

i have saved version8 to my computer several times now and it downloads into one of my drives with no problem. its when i double click and try to install it that i get the error message. it stops like 3/4 of the way through the validating installation process. the exact error message that i get when i try to open the older version of iTunes (i just was able to get version 7.5, but nothing newer than that will work) is:

The file "iTunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

as far as the previous iTunes library, i think i remember deleting that while trying the whole (delete all itunes folders and then try to reinstall it) process which didnt work. well if i didnt delete it, i still cant find it on my computer. is there any place that i should maybe look?
i appreciate you trying to help, thank you 😀

I'm pretty much in love with you right now
i still havnt gotten over the ISScript.msi error while trying to download iTunes version 8
but i have iTunes 7.5 working!!!
i just have to put all my music back on and figure out how to redownload my purchased items
ill post back if i come to another problem, which seeing my history with apple, there is sure to be another haha 😀
