Weird email since 2.0 Update

I updated my original iPhone to 2.0 on Friday & ever since have been having strange email behavior.

If I switch from edge to wifi or visa versa, the phone will no longer retrieve new mail without me doing a restart. It seems whatever mode it's in on startup won't let go of the control of mail until a restarts.

Last night I was using wifi & receiving mail fine. Early this morning I turned wifi off as I was going out & would not have wifi access. A few minutes ago, back at home, I switched wifi back on & got a flood of several emails from as early as 10:30 this morning.

I've also had the similar experience of having it on edge all day at work Saturday & receiving mail fine until I came home & switched to wifi & then I didn't get any more mail. When I switched back to edge the mail came through but it would never come through on wifi unless I restarted.

I also seems not to be able to send mail if I've switched from wifi to edge unless I do a restart. The wheel will spin for hours but the mail never goes. As soon as it finishes the restart, whoosh & off it goes.

Is anyone else have this same issue & does anyone have any possible solutions?

Thanks for any help!

What you are describing is exactly what I'm experiencing. I restored my phone at the recommendation of an AppleCare tech, and then re-added in my email accounts. Seemed to work right away, and then poof---long spinning wheel with "connecting" or "sending" and nothing happens.

Anyone have any thoughts? Seems like this one is going to need an update, as I'm rather confident that my settings are right.

No, I'm not using push. Just normal email like before through my local ISP. It worked perfectly before the update.

I don't really understand the whole push thing yet so I haven't even attempted to try it until I do a bit of reading on it.

I also deleted all 3 of my emails accounts & recreated them after the update & still no solution.

Yes, I too upgraded to 2.0 and have nothing but problems with my iphone email app. It receives mail just fine but will not send email out over the EDGE network or WiFi. I have done a complete restore and still no luck. This afternoon I did a restore completely back to factory settings. Then I recreated my email account and was able to send email out. However, I seem to be experiencing your same symptoms where it will not send email unless I switch back and forth between EDGE and my WiFi connection. VERY FRUSTRATING!

HA! I haven't had one email to the phone since updating to 2.0. When I read this article I restarted the phone and all my mail came in.

What's going on here?

I am also having major issues with WiFi. I cannot connect to my Airport Extreme when security is enabled on the AE. I took the phone to the Apple Store "Genius" and he was able to confirm that it wouldn't connect. Wow, thanks for the help! haha

I am having the same issue as the original post. I purchased an iPhone 3G and restored a backup from my 1st Gen iPhone via iTunes. Since then i am unable to send and receive emails regularly. I notice that i do not see the spinning wheel beside the 3G/WiFi icon at the top of screen when i cannot send/receive. I then turn the phone off and back on, and start receiving emails and can also send. This is very frustrating!

I'm having the same issue. I had received any emails since 2 PM yesterday, until reading this thread. I powered down and back up and I got the missing emails.

I'm using a first gen iPhone, went through the same agonizing process to update the software (two hour wait, "cannot connect to the iTunes store", etc.). Finally the software was updated, my phone totally froze on Friday. I restored everything on Saturday and I was getting mail fine until 2 PM yesterday. I hadn't powered off my phone until I read this post. Just tried that and my incoming mail was updated.

Help! This is particularly annoying.

I'm having this issue too, not using push-just unable to receive or send POP emails at all. I'll create a new account and see if that helps.

Weirdly I have twice got email since upgrading 1st gen to software 2.0 but it's pulling all the old messages off the (btinternet) server that had been previously downloaded.

During the upgrade I had a lot of errors about not completing restore and being unable to sync..and I notice that a lot of my recent SMS's have disappeared from the phone since finally getting it up and running.

I've also seen another anomaly, not sure if it's part of the email bug or a feature.

Prior to 2.0 I could never send email from my 2 accounts that use the cwmx.com as their outgoing server if I was connected to wifi. I use those to send email while I'm out & about & away from wifi & I use my primary account when I'm home on wifi. It would spin forever & eventually tell me it failed & was placed in the outbox. I had to turn off wifi & then they would go through.

Since 2.0 I can send email using either cwmx account even when wifi is on. This is only if I booted the phone with wifi on because as I originally stated, if I switch once the phone is powered up, no email works until I switch back or restart.

I was planning to get the new 3G phone but I think I'll hold off now as some have reported this same issue with the new device. I thought it was just affecting us updaters but apparently not.

Besides the inconvenience of this whole issue, once I activate the new phone, as I understand it, my old one becomes basically dead & I can't install any fixes Apple might release. I have a friend that wants my old phone but I won't dump it on them if it's not working correctly.

I am having a problem that sounds very similar. I first noticed that I hadn't received any email on the iphone for while and noticed the "connecting" message on the bottom for a long time. It never "connected" or "received email". When it is like this, any message that I try to send just goes out into space (lost). I hit the send button and the message that I typed disappears, but there is no "sending" bar at the bottom, the message never shows up in the sent or draft folder and is never received by the recipient. The only fix I have found is shutting the iphone off then back on. Then all the emails come rolling in. However any messages that I tried to send when it was acting up are lost. However, over time the same problem happens again- sometimes within minutes or sometime within hours. It happens on Edge, Wifi, and when it is allowed to switch back and forth. Turning the airport mode off/on doesn't fix the issue - only powering off/on. I have done a soft reset - still no long term fix. I have one email account set up with "push" and the others as "fetch". The problem occurs at the same time with all of them. I can access the internet at these times and receive phone/text messages. Calendar pushing doesn't work while it is acting up, however. Now experimenting with having the main "push" setting set to off and forcing everything to be "fetched". This just failed after 15 minutes - got the eternal "checking for email" at the bottom with the spinning circle. Interesting, I just noticed that there is no spinning circle at the top, however. Is is possible that this is an AT&T connection/communication issue isolated to email with the iphone even though signal bars and wifi bars are great?

I am having similar issues. I have three email accounts: MobileMe and two standard POP accounts. All work fine when connected on WiFi - however, when I am out of WiFi range and am on EDGE or 3G and mail attempts to fetch new messages, it just sits there forever and says "Connecting" or comes back and says there is a server problem (which there isn't since it works fine over WiFi)

Saw another topic here where they said to power cycle the phone. Did that and it works fine fetching if I turn WiFi off. Dunno if the behavior will re-manifest once it switches back and forth automatically between Wifi and EDGE/3G
