Contact Sorting for Japanese Names

I've noticed that when I switch my iPhone 3G to English language, the contacts list is sorted alphabetically and all Japanese names are listed under "#". If I switch the iPhone to Japanese language, the names are properly sorted by alphabet and in case of Japanese names by their Japanese characters.

Is there any way to have this proper sorting by alphabet + Japanese characters also in the English language setting?

iPhone 3G, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Yes, I had this problem too. Here's the fix.

Go into one of your Japanese contacts and click edit.
Go right to the bottom of the edit page and add field, add phonetic first name, then repeat the step to add phonetic last name.
Now edit the name of your contact, keep their name in Japanese and enter the phonetic spelling in English. That should do it.
