Canon MF4270 having trouble printing

Hi. I just bought a new Canon MF4270 multifunction printer. It's connected via USB to my Windows computer and by ethernet to my router. Printing from the Windows computer works great by either USB or ethernet, but it doesn't work quite as well on my mac.

If I connect the mac to the printer with the USB cable then it's fine, but my macbook usually isn't near the printer so I'd rather use the network connection. But when I try printing a multi-page document from my mac via the network it takes more than a minute for the first page to come out (as opposed to about 10 seconds from the Windows machine (with either USB or ethernet) or when the mac is connected by USB), then it sits there thinking for a few minutes (I'm guessing that it's processing the next page(s) ), then it just stops and doesn't print any other pages.

I followed all the instructions in the manual when setting up this printer, so I don't know what's wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

I also had a Canon MF4270 attached to a Linksys WRT54G router and could not print over wi-fi. Printer would print first page (and maybe a second) but eventually hang.

As in my previous post, I thought the issue was with the Linksys router and that has been confirmed. I just replace the WRT54G with a D-Link DIR-615. Problem solved. Print now works perfectly...

Before resorting to swapping out routers, I did try every type of security option (none, WEP, WPA, etc.) and also using a static and dynamic IP address. I also upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G. All of these things failed...new router was on sale and I was tired...so new router it is....

hoep that helps someone else out there...

Since the Windows computer is providing the share, and the problem only occurs when connecting via this share, then you could try adjusting some of the settings under the Ports tab of the UFR driver on the Windows box. Things like setting it to print after the complete file is spooled and processed may help.

If it doesn't, then can you tell us which version of Windows it is. I have used the UFR2 driver to our Canon copiers, albeit never via a Windows share. But I'd try some testing if you can give some more info.

Also, having helped a mate with his MF4270, I can tell you it doesn't like being connected to an Airport base station. The UFR driver never finds the printer and you cannot manually search for the printer 'ppd'. So connecting via your Windows share may be your only option. BTW - my mate changed his 4270 for a 4680. It cost more but it included Ethernet, meaning that it could exist on its own for both the Mac and Windows computers.

Hi PaHu. Actually, the problem occurs when I print to it via ethernet (the MF4270 has an ethernet port and is connected to my Linksys router). I can even print when the Windows computer is off (because it's connected by the network), but of course I get the same problem of only one page printing (and slowly).

The Windows computer is XP Home edition, and the router is a Linksys WRT54G.

We (me and my wife) bought a Canon MF4270 today. Since she has a PC and I have a Mac we elected to set the printer up as a network printer (I gave it a fixed IP address). Therefore the USB connection is not being used at all (the printer is not connected directly to any computer - access is only through the network).

The printer had a setup CD that came with it, and it worked perfectly for the two PCs that she uses in her office.

The problem came when I tried to get my Mac to talk to it. Since the PCs can print to it with no problem we KNOW that it is connected properly and responding to network access/traffic. In fact, when I try to access the printer via my browser, the printer responds perfectly.

The REAL problem is getting my Mac's printer system to recognize the driver software. I started by installing the UFRII version 170 software, and the installer claims that the software was properly installed. But when I try to setup the printer in the printer control panel, I set up an IP printer and supply the IP address the printer is set for, but when I try to select the driver, I choose Canon, and the list of canon drivers shows up, and although other Canon models show up in the list, the MF4270 is not in the list.

I then went back to the Canon web site and saw they had a Fax driver for the printer, so I downloaded it (it's version 210) and installed it. When I go to setup the printer again, the FAX driver shows up, just as it should, but the PRINT drivers are still not in the list. Although I don't expect to use it to fax docs from my computer i finished the FAX setup anyway, and gave it a try, and it shows up in my available printers and responds exactly as it should. But that's fine for Faxing, but does NOT let you print.

I then did a search on the internet, and saw that there was an older version of the PRINT driver, version 161, so I downloaded it, uninstalled version 170, and installed version 161. Same thing - the PRINT driver doesn't show up in the list during setup (but the FAX drivers are still there).

So I uninstalled version 161, and uninstalled the fax drivers (version 210), shut the computer down, restarted it, tried another printer setup, and now the Fax drivers are missing (as they should be since I uninstalled them) and the PRINT drivers are not showing up either (as they should be) .... and then I reinstalled version 170 PRINT drivers. (of course the install process made me restart the computer) ... and when I tried to perform a setup, the PRINT drivers still don't show up in the list of Canon printers.

I even found an alternate source for the version 170 drivers (that had a different file name - o84benx.dmg) and uninstalled the previous drivers and tried installing from this file - it said the install was successful - but they still don't show up in the setup list.

I'm running an intel iMac with OSX 10.4.11 on it (the computer won't run 10.5 - long story, so I won't go into that now - so switching to 10.5 is not an option)

The short summary is:
- the computer CAN talk to the printer via a browser (so we know that the wiring/address/access IS working)
- the FAX drivers DO show up and I can complete a setup using them and they work properly
- the PRINT drivers are not being listed as available printer models in the setup printer list, no matter whether I use version 161 or version 170

By the way, during all the installing/uninstalling I was doing I was looking in ~/library/printers/canon and the UFRII folder was being added or removed properly (depending on whether the drivers were supposed to be installed or uninstalled at the moment) - so even when the drivers were not showing up during the setup process, they WERE installed in the printers folder where they should be.

At this point, I'm stumped. I can't think of anything else to try.

Also, I tried going to CUPS and there is no driver there for the MF4270 (in fact - no drivers for ANY of the MF series)

To create a printer queue using the UFR2 driver, you need to select More Printers then Canon IP (UFR2). You then enter the IP address of the MF4270 and a queue name of LP. When you click Add the driver software will talk to the printer and select the appropriate model.

Version 1.70 is the best version for Leopard. I would run the v1.70 installer again and when it shows Easy Install, change this to Uninstall to remove the v1.61 and any other version of UFR2 that is lurking on your Mac. After you Quit the uninstaller, run the installer again to add the v1.70 files back onto your Mac. Then follow the procedure above to add the printer.

I own a Canon MF4270 and I'm using a MacBook Mac OS X ver. 10.5.4
Seems to be a bug with this current Mac OS version. I cain't add the Canon Fax V210 printer driver to the printer preferences...(It does not appear on the "drop down list)
Canon tech. support said that it a Apple issue and they are aware of the problem. The Canon fax driver worked on a eairlier OS X ver 10.5.3
Apple will be releasing OS X ver. 10.5.5 very soon and the above problem should be fixed...

We use the Canon Fax driver v2.11 with our imageRUNNER copier MFD's and it is working fine with 10.5.4, so I don't think what you have been told is correct. Looking through the readme for the v2.11 driver, it shows the MF4200 series as a supported product, so I would suggest you download this version. When you run the installer, when the menu shows Easy Install, change it to Uninstall to remove the previous version fax driver. When this is complete run the installer again to add the new version files.

To add the fax, if the machine is connected via USB, then you should see an entry of MF4270 Fax in the default view. Select this name and the print using should automatically change to CanonFAX.

If the MF is networked, then you will need to select More Printers then Canon IP (FAX). Input the IP address of the MF and leave the queue name as CanonFAX. Click Add to complete the installation.

Thats Good News nq2u: you have restored a bit of my faith in Apple.

Like many others, I am also without a printer until Apple fix up the bug thats in 10.5.4 My Brother MFC 7420 was working fine one day and is lost to my system the next. Any attempt to print just stalls with a message like "Printing 25%" or some such figure. I've tried uninstalling the driver, updating the latest driver from Brother, updating the Brother driver from Apple, switched USB cables, and finally talked to a helpful Brother phone support technician who got me to try and re-install from the Leopard DVD. When I open the Optional Installs and open Printer Drivers, the Brother drivers are greyed out. He said it was an Apple problem, and thats where I'm at right now. The G4 is one year out of its 3 year Protection Plan so I'll get no help from Apple. Its a bit like a whale calf crying in the middle of the ocean: no one hears it cry. Lots of people cant make their printers work since the 10.5.4 upgrade.

I've been having the same issue and have narrowed it down a bit after calling both Canon and Apple tech support.

My MF4270 is connected via ethernet to a Linksys WRT54G router and my MacBook was trying to print to it via wi-fi. Print job started OK, but would hang while queuing print job. It usually print out about 1 page.

So after Canon blamed Apple (repeatedly), the Apple tech support helped me actually diagnose the issue and I found that I COULD print via IP when connected to a WIRED connection. So it's apparently an issue with the WIRELESS printing...

Still working out the details on a solution, but I'm considering switching routers to see if that helps. I did try adjusting my wireless security (currently using WPA Personal), including removing all encryption...but no luck there.

Will post again if anything works...

Hey fly fisher. Thanks for the tip! I have the exact same configuration and problem (wirelessly printing to the MF4270 through the WRT45G), but I don't want to go buy a new router so I'll just continue using my windows machine for printing (which has no problems with printing). But, I'll keep this in mind in case I see a wireless router on sale.
