Purple dots on iPhone?

I just got the iphone 3g at launch and everything seemed fine. Today i noticed that there were three purple dots in the top left corner of the phone next to the receiver. I tried looking everywhere to see if anybody else had this problem but nobody seems to have this problem. I noticed it when there was sunlight.

Is this normal? I went to AT&T and they said it was probably supposed to be there.

i believe that the three dots are sensors. i remember looking it up when i noticed them too, and found something about them on one of the rumor sights that did a disassemble. sorry i can't provide the link though

I am almost certain i saw the same thing related to sensors. I believe they are to tell if you have the handset help up to your ear so the screen will turn black, then come lit again when taken away.

I can't find the link either but i read about it somewhere

There are two proximity sensors and one ambient light sensor to the left of the earpiece speaker. Those are the three "dots". The previous iPhone had just one proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor.

These are definitely sensors! I haven't seen much mentioned about this in the reviews, but lots of people had problems with the sensor being above the ear speaker. Certain cases interfered with it, and sometimes the phone would become live/light up and a user's face could hit the speakerphone or end call buttons. With the sensors on the side now, this is less unlikely!
