I'm having mega troubles with the 1608 error. Here's a list (not necessarily complete) of what I've tried:

1) Ensuring DCOM is set
2) Ensuring Admin privileges
3) Clearing temp directory
4) Uninstalling iTunes, iPod, QuickTime using Installer Clean-up
5) Removing then re-installing InstallShield
6) Manually loading IDriver and IDriver2 before the iTunes installer hangs
7) Running iTunes installer using "Run as"

Any additional pointers would be welcomed before I decide to build my own .mp3 player and software, with an eye toward putting Apple out of business.

🙂 since the list was not necessarily complete, you may end up getting suggestions you've already tried, Jonathan.

have you swung by Windows Update to make sure you're up to date in that regard?

have you been switching off your antivirus/antispyware?

have you been running the install locally from your hard drive?

have you tried the other tips and pointers that weren't mentioned explicitly on the 1608 page at Installshield?

keep us posted on your progress.

When I go to component services, it says that DCOM Service Process Launcher is started, but I am unable to stop it--that is, the start and stop buttons are both greyed out.

b interesting.
this is pretty much uncharted territory on a 1608 (at least, as far as i know), but it's probably worth checking to see if your DCOM Service Process Launcher service has been set to disabled. there are instructions on how to check that given here (see "Workaround"):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892504

if it
b is
disabled, does switching it to automatic allow the install to go through?

It was set on automatic. When I disabled it and then tried starting it manually, it said there was a time out and that it couldn't be started. Immediately after this, it was at this ambiguous grey state (can't be stopped or started). The installer still did not work.

I tried removing Service Pack 2 and then installing, and that still didn't work.

Thanks for the help thus far,
~J

hmmmm. okay, replying as much as anything to sling you back up into public view, Jonathan.

if i see one of our people with more technical skills with installer errors (CoJeff, toonz or Katrina), i'll try to guide them your way. the 1608 is common enough with other packages and machines that they are likely to have a few additional tricks and techniques at hand.

Did anyone get any further with this problem? I get 1608 errors when trying to install iTunes. So far I have done the following, taken from the Apple help section and the Installshield help section (sorry about the caps!):

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ADMIN ACCESS - Done

GET THE LATEST WINDOWS UPDATES - Done

DO YOU SEE AN ERROR MESSAGE? - Yes: 1608 Unable to create InstallDriver instance, Return code: -2147221164

FIX DCOM SETTINGS - Done

UPDATE INSTALLSCRIPT ENGINE - Done

MANUALLY REGISTER IDRIVER.EXE - Done (not sure anything happened)

INSTALL CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS - Already Done

CLEAN TEMP DIRECTORY - Done

CLOSE APPLICATIONS - Done

UNINSTALL AND DELETE PREVIOUS ITUNES FOLDER - Done

UNINSTALL AND DELETE PREVIOUS QUICKTIME FOLDER - Done

CLEAN UP ITUNES INSTALLER FILES - Done

Modify the System Configurations on Your Windows XP Computer - Done

Install IKernel - Done

...

But no joy. I've got service pack 2 and I'm on a networked machine - don't know how important this is. Any further thoughts?

hi benlish!

ouch. i'm pretty sure you right-clicked directly on the iTunesSetup.exe file, and got the version number from there. but that 6.0.1.3 doesn't refer to the InstallShield engine, that's the version of itunes that that particular iTunesSetup.exe installs.

first we need to "decompress" the installation to see which version of the engine is required. (i believe it's one of the two types of version 11) check instructions 1d-i-iii in here for details:

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322

(this is not a mistake that you should beat yourself up over ... i've seen several other people make that mistake recently when trying to follow those instructions. you're in good company.)

do things go a bit better after installing that engine?

keep us posted.

Hi b!

We're not out of the woods yet I'm afraid...

Here's my best summary:

1. When I try to install iTunes from my saved download, nothing appears in the temp folder. Instead, I use the disk which came with my nano, and then things appear.

2. At first, none of the files is an executable. There is a setup file containing the line ScriptVer=8.1.0.293 which might be relevant.

3. If I click through (language: English (US)) then I get three new files: 1033.MST, iPod for Windows 2005-09-03 (filetype: Windows Installer Package), and ISScript8 (filetype: Windows Installer Package). None of these files has a properties/version tab.

4. Then I get the 1608 error, and the temp directory clears.

5. So I go to http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108322, assume my file number starts with 8, and follow the instructions. I run the CD again, and exactly the same thing happens.

6. I assume my reading of file version 8 was wrong, so I go through each option on that page, and none of them get rid of my 1608 error.

Any thoughts?

Ben

ps thanks very much for all your help so far!

good lord. it's plausible that the nano disk has an itunes version 4.9 on it (which might have come with an earlier version of the engine), so it's quite possible that you're not misreading the InstallShield version number. (this might also explain why you're getting a 1608 ... they were certainly more common on a 4.9 than on later versions.)

... but i really don't like the way that the installer files are decompressing (or rather, not decompressing) for you at the moment. it's not something i've seen reported before.

... let's just explicitly check on something from the main troubleshooting document again:

Make sure your folder names don't contain strange characters

If the iTunes installer (iTunesSetup) is not responding or appears frozen after launching the installer or the iPod installer (iPodSetup) reports "Error reading setup initialization file" then the folder(s) where the installer is stored may contain unusual characters. This often results from copying a folder to your Windows system from a disk or network that is not natively formatted for Windows. If you notice that the iTunes or iPod installer or stored in a folder like this, either rename the folder or move the iPod or iTunes installer to another location before launching.

Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows

i'm actually only familiar with the "setup initialisation" variant of this problem, which i used to see primarily (again) with 4.9 installs and older versions of the ipod software installer. but it's at least plausible that we're seeing a 5.0.x/6.0.x variation of this beast ... so we should at least get the possibility off the table.

... keep us posted ...
