Ordinal not Found

I recently tried to upgrade to iTunes 5.0. The install went fine, but when I try to launch iTunes a get this error:
"The ordinal 21 could not be located in the dynamic link library MAPI32.dll." Does anyone have an idea on what the fix may be?

Thanks to David Cuevas, who offers a solution that worked for me:

"I've solved the problem..what has happened is that some program on your computer has replaced the mapi32.dll file with a new name...it could have been any of the following programs: eudora, thunderbird, mozilla, netscape etc..what you need to do is go to the following page: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=228457

here you will be guided in how to fix the mapi32.dll file, which is currently read-only. Afterwards, try opening itunes again and you should get the licensing agreement window, and then everything is fine.."

hi Bill!

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. My version of mapi32.dll is (according to the file properties, anyway) the original Microsoft file.

see the following thread (view all) for various other techniques for getting past the MAPI errors:

if you don't get any joy from that, could you post back to tell us precisely what error message you're getting? include error message numbers if you're getting any. sometimes it's easiest to send us a screenshot:

I'm no longer having the "Ordinal not found" message after a couple reboots. Now, instead, I have a "iTunes is not installed on your system" message, even though if I go into the program folder and click on the .exe file, I can run it.

I agree with the people in that thread you directed me to - what the FRACK is iTunes doing linking with the two most security-compromised programs in Windows history? I won't even have them on my system, yet iTunes wants them for syncing to an iPod? That's a good enough reason for me to not own an iPod. At least, not until Apple fixes that problem.

that web site completely fixed my problem! i had eudora and it replaced my mapi32.dll file. i dont know exactly what i did (i searched for my mapi32.dll file and checked to see if it was read-only and it wasnt; but once i tried to open itunes, it worked!) but whatever i did, it helped! although, i dont know if eudora will work afterwards because i no longer use eudora.
thanks so much!

Hi b,

Thanks but the thread you recommended was of no use. Here is what I did to try (and fail) to fix my problem. I uninstalled iT5 and QuickTime. Then I searched my hard drive for any remaining scraps of iT, QT, or Apple and deleted those. Then I went through my entire registry and deleted anything related to iT, QT, and Apple. Then I searched for bonjour and mDNSResponder....neither of which is on my IBM T-42 ThinkPad. After a reboot nothing seems to help. So here are my symptoms...
I can see my wireless router (linksys) at home but cannot acquire an IP address from it...so my wireless network at home is now useless to me, which pixxes me off to no end. I can see the wireless network at work AND acquire an IP address these, so at least I can work. Unfortunately, I rarely use a wireless connection at work and always use it at home. Any other hints before I have to get my laptop rebuilt?

Thanks,
P

hi P!

hmmmm. have you been to linksys to check up on your drivers and firmware yet? most of the BTvoyager issues were being dealt to by a firmware upgrade, seems worth checking that sort of thing for a linksys too (haven't seen as many reports of such problems with linksys though).

this reference might be useful. it's driver-oriented, but it may also help with tracking down the right info for firmware, too.

Dear b,

Thanks again...but I just updated my router's firmware and drivers about 2 months ago. I forgot to mention that my wife's laptop can still acquire an IP address from my router. The only differences between her machine and mine is essentially the iT5 install/uninstall. Sounds like I'll need to have my machine rebuilt from the ground up, unless there is anything else you can think of.

Regards,
P

Dearest b!

Good news and bad news... I downloaded the "new driver" for my wireless card. The search from the driver update didn't find anything new, but a new utility came with it that indicated it had a conflict with the wireless security utility from work. So I disabled the work utility and BINGO! I was able to get on my wireless network at home! The bad news is that the new utility is no good at work...so I disable the new one and re-enable the work utility and BINGO! I have wireless at work. So the good thing is that I can do wireless at home and at work without rebuilding my laptop...but the bad is that I have to go through the pain of remembering to switch utilities to acquire a wireless network. Thanks for your help!

Now for the downside for Apple...this whole experience has put a bad taste in my mouth (I am a 44yr old sr. manager at a Fortune 100 company... not a 19 yr old techno geek) so I don't have the time to do this much troubleshooting when poor software is released. So I won't be purchasing the 5 nanos for my family this Christmas. I'll either wait until 2006 or wait for the knock-offs from HP to hit the market.

Love you b!
P
