Joe, this is probably an issue with QuickTime since it's the playback software for iTunes. Please check on 2 things, what version of QT do you have & can you open QT & play music there?
I am having the same exact problem! itunes was working great. Now it isn't. I will try the quick time thing you suggested.
thanks soooooo much that was it i didnt have the quicktime downloaded correctly thanks for what you have done to make my life soooo much better
Great, glad I could help! It's alway nice to see a happy ending!

Classic, and your problem would be? Yes, I lived all of my life in Albuquerque until I moved to Arizona in 1987.
Great lace, uh my problem is iv done everything for it 2 but i recieve SERVICE ERROR on my updater, 9-23, my other problem is i get amessage saying i need to reinstall 5.1 when i plug in my ipod... any ideas... i think iv done everything... but any suggestions could help.. thanks... and how did you get the symbol when its not a selection anyway...
I assume that "SERVICE ERROR" is from iPod Updater. If i'm right you need "iPod setup" because updater doesn't contain ipodservice inside (Updater is about 30+MB but iPodSetup is about 40+MB) when you try to use updater it will seek for iPodService and if you have not installed iPodSetup then you will see that message.
Latest iPodSetup I know is iPodSetup 2005-06-26 install this one first then run your updater.
Hope this will help

Classic, when you reach Level 3, you are allowed to pick a personal icon, that's why mine is not on the list of icon choices. Here is a link that should help with your service error.

I'm having the same problem. I've installed the iPod 9.23.2005 setup and have the new iTunes 5.0.1 installed. When I try to update the iPod I get the "iPod Service Error" every time. Also, iTunes returns the error "iPod software not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes...". I've reinstalled both several times and followed the instructions on artnum=93716 with no luck. Any other ideas or suggestions???
I have sent this very problem to the WIZARDS at Apple and I keep getting links to sites that have NO relationship to the problem. I am thankful I ran into your discussion and will follow it....hopefully to resolution. Has there been a resolution? What is frustrating is there is NO error code. Just a reference to ITUNES.EXE
QT doesn't work in my case. In fact, I can not delete the icon from my home screen. I can delete it via the control panel (or so I think).
I AM SORRY TO SAY THAT THIS AFTERNOON (AFTER ONE WEEK) I TOOK MY SHUFFLE AND ALL THE ACCESSORIES BACK TO IT'S PLACE OF PURCHASE AND RETURNED IT FOR "IN STORE CREDIT". I TURNED RIGHT AROUND AND BOUGHT A DIFFERENT BRAND ALL TOGETHER. NO SPECIAL SOFTWARE AND IT EVEN HOLDS MORE SONGS FOR LESS MONEY! I AM NOW FREE OF ITUNES AND I CAN LISTEN TO MY MUCSIC ONCE AGAIN!
BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!

ok, where, or how do i download or get ipod setup???
Classic, if you are talking about the updater when you say "iPod setup", you can download it from the following link. Save it to your desktop, once the updater is downloaded you must open it & run it, connecting iPod only when asked.
