Is it me? From my HOME PAGE I'll select the contacts and it'll freeze on the Contacts page for a few seconds and then it will let scroll around like normal. Is this supposed to happen? Same thing if I try and go to contacts from the phone mode. I only have 93 listed contacts, so that shouldn't be too tough for it to cache or whatever it does.

You are not alone with this issue. For me it's not just contacts where the slow down is, occasionally typing a message can take 1-2 seconds for each key press to appear on the screen - highly annoying. It is also happening on my first iPhone since I upgraded it to 2.0
I've got the same issue. I guess it's because the contacts aren't actually stored on the phone, but downloading from the Mobile Me cloud? I have 150 contacts, maybe it depends on how many you have?
I don't think it really has anything to do with the number of contacts. I'm in the process of moving contacts over and only have 42 in the iPhone at this point. I get the same delay as others are reporting...
I have the original iPhone running 2.0 software.
My contacts are stored on a Microsoft Exchange Server, and before 2.0 I was synching them through iTunes using Outlook. With 2.0 I'm using Exchange ActiveSync on the iPhone for "push" contacts. I'm experiencing the same problem reported here.
I wanted to add this primary to note that I have the same number of contacts I had before the 2.0 upgrade, so I don't believe it's related to the number of contacts. My contacts are coming from the exact same source--they're just getting synched to my iPhone in a different way.
I believe this is a problem with the 2.0 software.

I don't see anyone giving reasons or answers. It this a black hole

Happens to me too. Its interesting, at first it will lag before you can scroll through contacts. However after the first time, it gets better. When i go back later, it'll work instantly. It may be a software issue at the moment. We'll see what happens with a new update. I would recommend just being patient. I've had 2 iphone 3gs and both acted the same.
I am having the same problem. This must be a software problem. I have about 150 contacts so far.It started happening after the upgrade to 2.0. I have an original iphone
Noticed this too. Sometimes the scroll seems to be stuck in the middle and needs to be scrolled down, before it will allow a scroll up.
This condition is directly linked to the MobileMe service, whether you use the service or not apparently. The slow down is cause by the phone trying to process syncing to MobileMe, or Exchange and slowing or stopping the use of scrolling and such as I guess it's maxing out the processor to perform the task.
Unlike the other accounts you create, you can't turn off the MobileMe account. So I deleted the account from my phone. As expected, my contacts disappeared immediately. I connected my phone to iTunes and checked Sync Address Book contacts in the Info tab. My contacts are now sync to the Address Book on my Mac. Now when I open contacts on my phone there is still a 5-10 sec. delay, as thought it is still checking MobileMe. I cannot come up with any other explanation for this behavior other than MobileMe.
Is MobileMe hard coded into the contacts whether you use the service or not? If so, they need to find another way to implement this.

Ummm.... I don't quite follow your logic there. You claim that it is "directly linked" to MobileMe, but then go on to say that you still get the delay even if you delete the MobileMe account from your phone.
I think a much more plausible explanation is that Contacts is a memory hog, so when it starts up and is gasping for memory, the iPhone core platform has to go around and invoke memory warnings on all the other apps, which takes time.
Try this to see what I mean:
Test A - Starting Contacts after a lot of other apps
1. Open and close many apps, particularly memory-intensive ones like games with good graphics
2. Start Contacts
--> Delay of several seconds before scrolling becomes responsive
Test B - Starting Contacts immediately after iPhone reboot
1. Hold down the sleep button and slide to power off the iPhone
2. Hold down the sleep button again to power it up
3. Start Contacts
--> Scrolling is responsive immediately

Your right about that, Good point.

Here's a workaround to slow contacts that seems to work for me and my 153 contacts.
I just launch "Phone" and select the "Contacts" icon from the bottom of the screen. I get instant access and smooth scrolling of all my contacts from within the Phone app.
If I close the "Phone" app and open the dedicated "Contacts" app, I see the initial delay and not so smooth scrolling at first. After the delay, I see normal behavior.
I hope the workaround helps you as it did for me.

I have 4000+ contacts and really struggling with the lag, but found a workaround:
Try downloading the free Google app. This application searches your contacts quickly and with no lag.
A somewhat reasonable workaround.
