battery life with 2.0 update

What's your usage stats like? They're now under 'General' in 'Settings'. I've noticed a substantial increase in 'Usage' compared to 'Standby'. For example, right now I have had about 18 hours of standby, of which, 13 hours have been usage. Now this is interesting since I have been in bed and tiling my bathroom for most of that time, so 'real' usage by me would really be around 2 hours max. The most likely candidates are that you have push enabled and you've received some large email attachments over GPRS/EDGE, and/or you have non-IMAP accounts on auto fetch and received similarly large emails??

No idea if this makes any difference but I thought maybe it might spark off some sort of recognition of a potential solution... I notice that some apps I've installed are backgrounded rather than exited when you come out of them. I'm thinking that this is why my usage is unnaturally high whilst I've been asleep (and awoke to find my usually 90% charged in the morning iPhone, shut down and out of charge completely...) I noticed especially that the AIM app has an option in settings to sign out when exiting the program, suggesting that it's backgrounded and running whilst you're not using it?

Same exact thing with my original iphone as well. I also suspect some of the apps that I've installed-of which I also have AIM. Going to check settings and see if that makes a difference.

I've noticed this too but I suspect it is the display which used to automatically go to sleep and now doesn't. I can't find an option to change this.

My battery life has also been a disaster since the 2.0 update, and I am surprised its not been mentioned elsewhere on the forums.

I wonder if the issue is the Activesync connection. I used it on Sunday with push email, calendar and contacts and got just shy of a day's battery. When I returned to work on Monday, with plenty of emails coming through, by 3pm the battery had drained to 10%. As I was in meetings all day, my phone was at my desk, unused to check mail etc. I did not make a single call the whole day.

I'd thought about that too but before I upgraded to 2.0 I was using IMAP to check automatically as often as the phone allowed (every 15 mins?) and battery life was never an issue. While ActiveSync is obviously going to be active more regularly surely it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

I have noticed the screen now seems to have a mind of its own and switch on at random intervals. When the screen is on sleep the battery life seems to return to the levels of the 1.x software.

After the 2.0 update my phone will no longer take a full charge. Now I am sad and I want to die. 😟

Yep - I can't get a full charge either. There is def battery issue with 2.0 software on original iphones.

I've noticed a significant drop in my battery life since upgrading to 2.0 software. I used to be able to charge my iPhone completely in the evening before I go to bed, unplug it and wake up in the morning and the battery meter would still be almost completely full. Since upgrading to 2.0, I do the same exact thing except my battery is almost down to 50% when I wake up. Is one of the unannounced features of 2.0 called "Auto Battery Drain"? What gives Apple? This needs to be fixed, I miss my old battery life.

I'm still using the same gmail imap account that I did before the update, and still only have it set to check for mail every hour.

Apple claims that apps can't run in the background, and they quit when you press the home button, so I don't see how any apps installed from the app store would cause this.

Same problem here. After the 2.0 update, my phone is getting about 1/2 of the battery life it used to. I took it off the charger around 8am (letting it charge fully overnight) and at 1:30pm the battery gauge is already down around 50%. I can't imagine push email is eating THAT much battery power?

Hopefully an update will resolve this ASAP.

I have had the same problem, but was able to make some headway. Maybe this will help others:

1. I removed any third party apps I had that did remote connections. Even though they should be sandboxed, I just wanted to be sure. This included apps such as BoxOffice, Express, and Remote. The only one I left on was Google remote.

2. I turned push off and have it fetching from my exchange server every 15 minutes.

3. I turned my gmail account off, so I only have 1 email account active currently.

4. I modified my exchange calendar sync to only go 2 weeks back.

As of today, I have had my phone on for over 5 hours and it is still fully charged like it used to be. I will start adding apps and settings back one at a time. I personally think it is the exchange sync that is doing it, I am really suspicious of the calendar, since others in my office view and modify my calendar. Maybe this modified something and the phone then thinks it has to resync evertytime.

Try Settings>General>Auto-Lock. You could be set to "Never".

I agree with you. I upgraded my original iPhone, which had excellent battery life, to 2.0 and now by the afternoon I only have 50%. By the time I get home I only have about 20% power left. I've never had a battery problem. In fact I never fell below 50% even on a heavy use day before upgrading. We currently have 3 original iPhones, 2 of which we upgraded. Both the upgraded phones are experiencing tremendous battery drain. We are also having email issues, but I'll post that in another section. The iPhone was fantastic until the update. Any suggestions?

I have upgraded w/ 2.0 and battery life is horrible. I don't use Bluetooth or wireless or any other application, just a normal useage as before.
Is Apple aware of this issue and are they doing anything about it? If this is what you get w/ 3G then forget 3G.
