Creating Partition Map - How Long

I purchased and external firewire HD and want to partition it to separate machine backups.

I'm creating 4 partition,using the Disk Utility, on a new Iomega 750GB HD and the message states that its Creating Partition Map and it's been running for a long time.

I'm going to let it continue, but am wondering if I can interrupt it?

How long should this take? There isn't any disk activity going on.

So if I've left it alone for a few hours, something's wrong, but who do I contact?

How would you go about resolving the issue?

FYI - I closed the process, got a bunch of errors that I didn't write down, but ended up erasing and will start over tonight.

Partitioning the drive really is an eye blink, so there no sense in letting it go any longer. Stop the process and re-format the drive "Mac OS Extended Journaled". If that doesn't work gett in touch with the drive manufacturer,
