After 2.0 update--phone won't restore gives a "unknown error (6)"

When I went to the Apple Store, they said that the "unknown error (6)" comes up when you're not using USB 2.0. They restored my phone but when I tried syncing it to my computer it went kaput again. I thought I had 2.0 but I may have been mistaken. I'll try it one more time with a 2.0 port.

I had the same error when I was updating, called and spoke to Apple and was directed to disconect my phone, go into C:/documents and settings/owner/application data/apple computer/i tunes

Once there I was told to delete the folders "iPhone Software Updates" and "iPhone updater logs" as well as (these will only apply if you also sync an iPod) "iPod Software updates" and "iPod updater logs"

I was then told to reconnect my phone which prompted a new download of the 2.0 software and it installed without a hitch.

The explanation I got was that sometimes during download the file can be slightly corrupted so this is the way to start with a fresh download and make sure that the iPhone tries to install from the fresh and not the old.

Dunno if it is reliable for everyone but it worked for me.

cant seem to find the folders listed anywhere!

how do you sync it when its still with the usb cable and itunes icon and wont connect to itunes? how do you get it off showing the usb cable and music cd?

When you are on your C: drive go to Tools>Folder Options....then go to the view tab and make sure "view hidden files and folders" is on.

Also if you have a user name set up other than "Owner" replace owner with the user name you use to log into your computer and you should find them.

They told you that it wasn't a USB error? I also got a "(16ll)" error. I forgot what they said that was about. It's just getting irritating. I've had to downgrade to a Razr as a secondary. arghh...

Okay, something is wrong with my computer. I tried to restore on another computer, PC, and it worked. The thought of why I was having some trouble on my computer may be that the USB ports might be double assigned and it's causing mayhem when I tried to do an update and gives me the "USB" error, if that's what it really is.
The good thing was that everything was restored on my phone after I restored it on the other computer and ran the back up sync from my computer.
My temporary fix for this problem: I will be manually syncing my phone to the my computer and skipping the updates unless it's a crucial one. Remedial as it may sound but it's the only way I can ensure having a phone that works when it's my primary phone.
