everything keeps crashing

Hi
I really dont know a whole lot about computers but my problem is everything keeps crashing from itunes to mail to iphoto to firefox. i dont know why this keeps happening. went to disk utility to run a repair and it says everything is fine. the other day i open up my mackbook and its like everything was reinstalled. I never did a reinstall. I still had all my photos and music but it was like it went back to the original settings. Its running really slow and i have no idea how o fix it. If someone has any advise i would appreciate it.

Hello Darbius,

There are 2 possible scenarios causing the "crashing" that you described.
Scenario 1: A corrupt OS X install
Scenario 2: A Faulty Logic board

With all due respect to jimocallaghan, this isn't something that an update will fix. If it is a corrupt OS X install, create a new user profile and boot into it. If everything works fine with no crashing then it is a corrupt OS X user profile. In which case you would need to merge your data over to the new profile and then you are set.

If the new user profile still experiences crashing, then it is either a corruption of the BASE OS X install (which you would need to completely reinstall os x 10.4) or a faulty logic board. But follow my directions above to rule out a corrupt OS X user profile.

Hope that helps,
Matt.

If you're going to correct posts, be sure that you know what you're talking about.

Applying the most up to date version of any OS can, and does, fix a great deal of problems. Recommending, as a fix, reinstalling the OS X, is a radical step, and not necessary, in most cases. As responders, we will try every workaround first, without causing alarm to the OP, beginning with verifying the Disk, and Permissions. Then there's a whole lot of things to do, including your suggestion, of a test account, before getting into the more serious stuff. All of this may well end with an A&I.

Talking about Reinstalling the System, and problems with the Mother Board, are, to say the least, premature.

Jim-
I clicked on 'about this mac' and it says that the version is 10.4.11 and it still keeps happening, any other suggestions?

Matt-
I would reinstall but i dont want to lose anything. i keep trying to create backups but everything keeps crashing before i can.

I really do appreciate your guys help. Do you think i should just take it to the Apple store?

Ok, no panic.

Back to basics, I'm afraid. This must be done now.

After booting, Select your Language.

When the next Window shows, look up top, to the Menu Bar.

Select Utilities, then Disk Utility.

Select the HD from the list on the left hand side, (usually the First one)

Click the First Aid tab, and then, at the bottom, select Repair Disk. Quit DU and Installer Reboot.

After boot up, select Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, select the HD, click First Aid, and Repair Disk Permissions.

Come back to us when that's done, but follow the steps precisely.

I should have said this at the top...Boot from Install Disk, holding down the C Key, till the Apple Logo appears. Now, the Language.
