how do you deactivate old 2G iPhone to use only as wi-fi iPod

I've removed the old SIM card, but when I plug it into the computer, iTunes says it needs to have a SIM card, etc.

What am I missig? I thought this was easy to deactive and use as an iPod now that I have a 3G iPhone as well.

mac pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Whatever you do, don't upgrade to 2.0 on the 1st iPhone if you got a 3g like I did. All it did for me was turn it into a locked up piece of crap that wants me to reactivate it.

Wish I'd have known. AT&T and apple have both told me they didn't know what to tell me and to have a nice day. Really *****.
