Stop iTunes from becoming my default player

I may get in a lot of trouble for this, but I do NOT want iTunes to be my default player for music, yet it keeps trying to make itself the default. I have tried to use the Default Programs in Windows Control Panel, but iTunes keeps overriding those settings. When in iTunes itself can I disable the feature that keeps making it the default player?

Hi,
have you checked your preferences? I have the german iTunes, so I have to translate and hope you understand what I mean.
In your preferences (or settings) you have different types of tabs like Apple TV, Sync, General, Podcast etc.
The last one (translated it would mean like "more" or "extended") has the option where the folder is for your iTunes Music, AirTunes and Visual Effects Options.
One of them says "make iTunes standard for music files".
uncheck this option.
Then go to the preferences (or settings) of your prefered audio player and check the files you want to associate with.
Hope I was able to help.
