Nokia N73 Bluetooth ISync fails after Firmware upgrade..

I perhaps foolishly updated the firmware on my N73 t the latest version and indeed everything n the phone runs faster now. However it is now impossible to use Bluetooth as the phone will no longer pair with a macintosh. It will par with a normal windows machine.

Since the effect took place immediately after the firmware upgrade was performed, and everything was fine before this, my assumption was that this was a Nokia issue.

Having spent a considerable time negotiating with Nokia Support who's initial stance was to just pivot to "take it up with apple".
I had to invoke an internal relationship as I work for Vodafone and asked is it Nokia's official position that they are no longer interested in supporting Macintosh users?

Here is their reply:
Thank you for contacting Nokia Care

The software update for the N73 involved a change of BT profile. The profile was upgrade from a 1.2 to a 2.0 profile.
And yes this is a Mac problem, as Mac is aware of this and is the responsible party for developping the ISync.

The compatibility charts for ISync on the Nokia site is given by Mac, as you might have noticed the Isync download is / was even removed. The company policy of Mac is to let no tirth party develop software, and take as well full responsability for it.

So it would appear this is up to Apple to patch the O/S to fix this. If anyone from Apple support is reading this, it's an issue affecting thousands of Nokia/Mac owners and a patch would be gratefully received...

Hmmm... that's interesting from Nokia. Although I don't believe the line that says:

+"The company policy of Mac is to let no tirth party develop software, and take as well full responsability for it."+

Apple has released developer tools specifically to allow phone manufactures to create iSync support for their phones, so it's not correct that Apple don't allow third parties to develop software! That's the whole point of iSync's Plugin architecture.

Plus, in theory, Bluetooth profiles should be backwards compatible...

Just to add:

I wrote about it on my site: http://www.mistermac.co.uk/files/644cd413d56697b354673f7d23d169fc-320.html

In short (or not so short).

I recently inherited a Nokia N73, it worked fine with iSync/bluetooth and the Nokia Multimedia Transfer software with iTunes/iPhoto. The phone was rather unresponsive though, click a button, wait, then it does it. So, in my wisdom, I upgraded the firmware to 4.0735.3.0.2.

That was no easy thing either. I had to dig an old PC out of the cupboard, install Windows XP, install more memory as the Nokia Software Update requires at least 256mb. Yes, there is no way to update your Nokia phone on the Mac (and I mean in the Mac OS).

The phone updated felt a lot more responsive but then I found out the terrible cost, no bluetooth or iSync. The phone will pair with the Mac, but I can't browse it with bluetooth and iSync now just gives the error message: "iSync cannot connect to this device."

I contacted Nokia: They suggest rebooting your phone & restarting your computer. They also suggested going to: http://europe.nokia.com/A4299040 to download the Nokia N73 plug-in. Of course, there is no N73 plug-in. On Nokia's own site it says it should just work.

I explained this to them, and they said I should contact Mac [sic]. Calling them Mac and not Apple was a bad sign straight away. They said to visit: http://www.apple.com/macosx/ for assistance.

Now perhaps there's a built in plug-in, if there is, it needs updating by someone, I don't care who, Nokia or Apple. This is almost a cliche being caught between two corporations, one blaming the other and neither coming up with a solution.

There is a long thread at Nokia's site here: http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=connectivity&m essage.id=17290&jump=true#M17290

[Nokia said they do not read or comment on their support threads - great]

I may have a solution:

The Missing Sync for Symbian has just been released, it's $40(US) which isn't cheap but the N73 is listed as being supported. It also adds more features than iSync alone.

I can't see any demo, I may've missed it so I've not tested it. If anyone does, do let us know.

(I'll post this on the various N73 threads)

Turns out there is a Demo:

http://mirror.markspace.com/missingsyncsymbian1.0.0.dmg

"NOTE: You must be running Mac OS 10.5.4"

Sadly after it pairs with the phone, I get the following error:

OBEX error fileTransferServicesDisconnectionComplete
kOBEXSessionTransportDiedError|
kOBEXSessionNoTransportError|
kOBEXSessionNotConnectedError: -21880.

I notice the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar briefly gets the slash "-" through it, and on the phone the icon is becomes bracketed (B) to indicate they are trying to do something.

Maybe it's just me?

It's not just you.

I've contacted Mark/Space today and they gave me a link to their support pages.

This article describes compatibility and performance issues specific to the Nokia n73, when using The Missing Sync for Symbian.
The Nokia n73 smartphone will fail to PAIR to Macintosh computers that have Mac OS 10.5.x installed, if the n73 is running the Firmware version: V4.0735.3.02. Currently, the only known solution is to pair the smartphone to a Macintosh running an earlier revision of the Mac OS, as "downgrading" the Symbian device is NOT recommended.
To check the existing firmware version on your Symbian n73, enter *#0000# (star-pound-zero-zero-zero-zero-pound) from the keypad. If your firmware version is V4.0735.3.0.2, you may not be able to pair your device over Bluetooth to a Macintosh running Mac OS 10.5.x, but should be able to pair your device to a Macintosh running Mac OS 10.4.11
Earlier versions of the Nokia firmware, do not appear to have an issue pairing with Mac OS 10.5.x or Mac OS 10.4.11.

I cannot give you the link to this information, since it's only viewable if one is a member of Mark/Space's support pages.

So, Mark/Space will not help us out.

Every day I get more frustrated, especially today when I've lost my USB cable.

Hi All,

Thanks for the many suggestions but after reading all this and some very helpful stuff from Apple, as well as experiencing complete misdirection from NokiaCare who can't believe their firmware is to blame, I fixed the problem as I should have from the start.
I bought an iPhone 3G, it works, it syncs, it's better/faster than the N73 in every respect, with the exception of the lack of flash on the camera, but even the camera is pretty good and for my purposes the picture quality is as good as the N73 apart from in lowlight conditions, it's a Phone not a professional camera after all.

Sorry you guys are still having problems but I'm done doing Nokia's job for them, and I'd like to thank all the apathetic support staff at NokiaCare possibly the most misleading title for a dept? for helping me make up my mind to stop giving them my hard earned cash, they obviously hate all Mac owners anyway "why don't you sync on a PC was one incredibly helpful suggestion" So I have to buy a PC to overcome Nokia's firmware shortcomings?

Later...
