Tiger Vs Leopard on MBP 1.8 Reinestall

I am buying a new drive and need to reinstall the OS. I currently have Tiger and was wondering if Leopard would make a big difference with performance.

I have messed up my OS with lots of disk errors I need everything to be clean. I have bootcamp installed now but it's the beta, I want to get rid of that for the new version as well.

What is the best way to back up and reinstall my stuff?

How easy is it to upgrade to Leopard from Tiger, do you need to reinstal or can u just upgrade to it like an update?

As for the relative speed of Leopard to Tiger, there really isn't a significant difference. Some things can be a little faster, while others slower. The real advantage of one over the other is the compatibility of some web browsing is better, and the launching from the folders and QuickView is easier. Spotlight can be faster on some machines, but not all, because indexing may not have been completed.

Leopard likely can import Tiger data, but Tiger data may have trouble with Leopard data when it comes to the Migration Assistant. It is ideal to put a clone on a Firewire drive, since the Migration Assistant expects to hook up via Target Disk Mode with another Mac, which effectively makes that Mac an external Firewire hard drive.

Note, Migration assistant between PowerPC and Intel Mac data don't work very well.

So does this have to be firewire can't be USB?

Also can the Cloned file be opened and edited like a folder?

After importing I should have all my stored files in My docs, itunes and iphoto, iweb?

Thanks for the help, hopefully my reformatting will go quick and easy.
