Why does itunes sync take so long after 2.0 upgrade

I've noticed that since upgrading to 2.0 last week, whenever I plug in my iphone to my computer the sync with iTunes takes forever. (At least several minutes.) It appears that itunes, rather than just syncing contacts and making sure music is the same and such is repeating to some extent the procedure it went through when I upgraded the phone to 2.0. When I connect my phone, it says "backing up iphone", then the progress bar chugs along for several minutes, then "restoring iphone" which takes several more minutes. It does this every time I sync with iTunes. Is anyone else noticing this behavior? It still works fine, but it's annoying that a sync which used to take 30 seconds now takes up 5-10 minutes.

I'm not saying cancel the sync. Let me try to clarify. When you first start the sync, watch the display in the iTunes display menu (the part where it usually says what song you're listening to or other graphics). Wait for it to say something like "backing up 'user' iPhone" and you will have the opportunity to press an x on the right to cancel the "backing up" part. This will then skip to the rest of the syncing process. good luck.

It's kind of like science class. You need a "control". If you are basing your results off people who already have a "buggy" firmware update, you are not getting accurate results.

Now I may be one of the "lucky" ones here, but I have zero problems with v.2.0 on mine and my wifes's 1st gen phone. I now have 16 apps installed. I do not have any "lag" while texting, my apps do not crash, my wifi connection is superb, my battery life is as good as it's ever been, google maps finds me just fine, email works just fine, and the signal is just as strong as it has been before the update.

The more apps I have...the longer it takes to backup. I just tested my phone...even with 16 apps it took all of 3 minutes to backup and synch (I've used three of them since I last docked my phone). Now the amount of time it takes to back up will be dependant on the "type" of apps you have installed, and how many you have used since the last backup. If you have apps that save what level you are currently in (games) or apps that save preferences everytime you use them...it is going to "backup" and take a little longer when you dock your phone.

Now this is just my opinion, but I am betting that most of the multiple hour backups I see posted are on phones that have a "buggy" firmware update.

Here are my specs:

Audio: 3.89 Gigs
Video: 541.6 Mb
Photos: 3.3 Mb
Other: 264.2 Mb
Free Space: 2.40 Gigs
Apps: 16

I'd be interested to see other people's specs and backup/synch times...AND whether or not you have a "buggy" firmware update (text lags, connection issues, etc) OR a "clean" update (everything works fine on your phone).

I am having the same "too long sync" pb since upgrade to 2.0
OS is WinXP with Outlook 2003.
Some days after upgrade my company upgraded my laptop to Outlook 2007. Same pb - no difference -

Sync steps I can see in the iTunes top bar are :
- 'iphone backup" , less than 1min - OK
- 'sync of "iphone XXX", max 1min - OK
- sync of contacts : about 15 min !
- sync of calendar : another 15 min !
The sync succeeds but the next sync will be another 30min !

I tried basic advices from apple about winXP sync troubleshoot http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1692 (except resinstall iTunes) but found no changes.

I succeeded once Today : when starting outlook2007, the system shouw a balloon mentionning a pb on a data file has been detected (sthg like "appli not correctly closed"). The system checked and fixed the file. The next contact sync was ok (~1min) but calendar still 15min. But the =contact sync after is back to 15 min.

This is not a CPU pb (max 10% use). There are a lot of disk i/o. During the contact sync step, the HDD led is lit permanently. During calendar sync step, the HDD led blinks permanently.

Resetting the phone does work for me.
The 2.0 upgrade brought a dual Home/Outlook calendar. Due to some tests I wonder if there a link between this new feature and our problem.

This is the first defect I found for this very well designed phone.

Sure we need help.

Faster syncs - If you ONLY need to sync your contacts and your calender on your iPhone i recommend running iSync instead syncing using iTunes.

You can also add this to the Menu Bar, to avoid having to open isync every time. (Open iSync, select iSync --> Preferences and check the option to show status in menu bar)

Then you can click on this icon and select sync. Please note that the iPhone does not indicate that you are "syncing" and you can only tell it has completed when the iSync logo stops rotating.

My iTunes (iPhone 3G) also takes forever to "backup", at least 20-30 mins (but usually 1+ hour). This is truly unacceptable. I thought it was just because I had a PC, but apparently that doesn't matter. I thought Apple was all about speed and flair? Hopefully, Apple will solve this problem soon.

Also, while you're at it, re-write your firmware so every single application, including the ironclad Safari browser, doesn't crash on me. No joke, my iPhone Apps crash 20x a day, with Safari being the biggest repeat offender. Finally, please stop being childish and allow Flash on your OS. Half the websites out there use it, join the party.
