Troubles with Tunes (+ QuickTime) 6 for Windows

Impossible to update to, install or reinstall the latest version of iTunes (+ Quicktime).
I always receive the following error messages:
- with iTunesSetup, the InstallShield Wizard gives:
- when repairing => error -3
- when removing + reinstalling => error -3
and afterwards restarting iTunes => error - 2093
- with QuickTimeInstaller, the Installshield Wizard gives:
- when installing => error - 1603
So, I don't succeed to reinstall both programs iTunes and QuickTime and I have no longer access to my music.
Who can solve this problem. Wherefore thanks in advance.

Eve

Thanks for your advice, but it didn't work.
But in the meantime I found another procedure (I don't remember where)that works well. Maybe other users can try it to.
Install the Microsoft "Windows Installer Clean Up" utility which you can find at the Microsoft website http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301.
Run this and clean up QuickTime and iTunes (ONLY these two).
Then restart and instal iTunes (including QuickTime).

Kind regards, Eve

well done Eve!

Thanks for your advice, but it didn't work.

many thanks for the report. apologies for being nosy, but would you mind if i asked you some follow up questions here? it's helpful for the community if we get some detailed information on the trickier versions of these things.

so the trick in your case was running Cleanup on
b both
itunes and QT 7 (rather than just QT 7 like i suggested)?

what error messages were you getting on the QT 7 standalone install after you followed my suggested procedure? or was it an "uninstall log" error on the QT uninstall? or was it a launch error when you tried to run itunes?

Eve, you win HANDS DOWN for the funkiest name that I have ever witnessed!!!!

I hope that I can come through for you after you blew me away with that moniker! Here is a post that I added two weeks ago. It includes a solution that worked for me. I hope that it works for you! Good luck.

Hey troubled Podheads,

I was one of the legion with problems in downloading iTunes6 and QT7 for Windows until I tried something (I must say that I am not a pc wizard and I don't know the technical reasons for why the following worked, it just did! So if there are any pc geeks out there, be sure to chime in). Anyway, this is what I did. First uninstall QuickTime if you do have it on your pc. If not, just go to the next step:

Go to START, then RUN. Type in regedit and then click OK. Your REGISTRY EDITOR should open. You should see HKEY LOCALMACHINE in the scroll down menu on the left, with a small box to its left. Make sure that the inside of the box has a negative sign - this will open up the next set of subfolders. Next, make sure that the subfolder, SOFTWARE, has a negative sign in the small box to its left. Next, make sure that there is a negative sign in the box next to the subfolder entitled, Apple Computer, Inc. You'll see at least three subfolders: iPod, iTunes and QuickTime. Click once on the QuickTime folder until it is highlighted and then delete it. You will be asked if you want to delete QuickTime and its subfolders. Click ok and then close out the Registry Editor.

Next, download the stand alone QuickTime 7 at this link (you may have to cut and paste this link to open this website):
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

When you download the stand alone QT7, you may get a couple of error messages (I did), but if you repeatedly click ok (like I did), the QT7 player should load with no problems.

Again, I am no pc geek, but this worked for me and I have gained access to iTunes6 (with video capacity) and my complete library is intact. Nothing like trial and error!! Good luck -- I hope this works for all of you frustrated Podheads out there!

Hi b,

Yes indeed, that seems to be the trick (obviously in my case and probably in all simular ones):

what error messages were you getting on the QT 7 standalone install after you followed my suggested procedure? or was it an "uninstall log" error on the QT uninstall? or was it a launch error when you tried to run itunes?

I had the following errors:

1) installing with iTunesSetup (iT incl. QT7):
- when repairing => error -3
- when removing + reinstalling => error -3
and afterwards restarting iTunes => error - 2093

b => After installing iT6 (incl. QT7), iT was find as a folder in the Program folder, but there was no separate folder for QT.

2) installing with QuickTimeInstaller (standalone QT7):
- when installing => error - 1603

b => Not possibile to install QT

But after cleaning iT and QT with "Windows Clean Up" and installing iTunes 6 (including QuickTimes 7), both programs work perfect (with no loss of any earlier downloaded music).

Kind regards, Eve

gaah! starting to see a small cluster of standalone 1603s on QT 7.0.3 installs. up until now, some of the things we've been resorting to have been a bit desperate. nice to know that the Windows Cleanup technique has a fair chance of working against them.
