Deleting recurring events in iCal do not Delete on iPhone

When I delete a recurring all day event anywhere but the iPhone - just one of the occurrences - it deletes from iCal and MobileMe; however, it remains on the iPhone. Any number of manual syncs doesn't delete the event from the iPhone until I manually select it and delete it. If I first delete a recurring event occurrence on the iPhone, it deletes everywhere else correctly.

Any ideas???

This worked for me to get rid of unwanted invitations that could not be deleted on the iPhone:
1 - make sure that the unwanted invitations are deleted on iCal
2 - in the Settings app on your iPhone turn OFF calendar sync
3 - you will be warned that this will delete the iPhone calendar - this is GOOD news as it will give you an empty iPhone calendar
4 - turn calendar sync ON
5 - MobileMe will push you a new calendar that has the exact events that are currently on your iCal

I have this exact problem, even with the 2.1 software. All events sync on the phone fine when changes are made in iCal, except for all day repeating events. If the all day event does not repeat, it will disappear from the iPhone if deleted in iCal. If it's a repeating event with a time (like 6am) and you delete it in iCal, it will disappear from the phone, but an all day event that repeats does not disappear from the iPhone when deleted in iCal until you manually delete it on the iPhone. If you delete on the phone first that's OK, but it doesn't work the other way around. Why has no one at Apple seen this and fixed it yet?

Thank-you very much Jason. I will try it, but I am fairly certain it will not work. Here's why....

It is really important to note that I do NOT sync to my PC calendars, contacts, mail or use MobileMe . These are all DISABLED in the iTunes configuation on the Info tab. Most importnatly I do not sync the Calendar of Events.

I do sync mail to my gmail account over-the-air (phone netowrk), not via PC. I also sync Music, Videos and Photos via iTunes. That's it. Nothing related to the Calendar.

Again, I do not think this has to do with SW on the PCs or Macs. I beleive it to be with the iPhone OS. Once I deleted the Recurring event, and it does not show in the calendar, but continues to be alerted whenever the event occurs. Note that I configured the Events to recur forever so this has become a real nuisance after I deleted them. There are about 4-5 of this nature I have deleted. 1 of them is a Daily occurence at 4PM that no longer occurs. Hassle.

This is very disturbing and it is being experienced by at least all the users in this thread. Granted it is not being widely reported since recurring events generally are not used by most. Also most people put an end date on a recurring event and so they just live with it until the last event occurs. But those whi do not configure something for an end date (like reminding me of a daily duty that needs to be done), and then it no longer is required....it is an issue.

OK I Just completed the procedure that Jason asked me to perform. I actually used the subprocedure for PCs where I moved Calendar events from the iPhone to the PC. Again, the recurring events did not appear in the Outlook calendar.

Please note that my Outlook calendare was completely empty when I did this as I do not use the Outlook client on my personal PC laptop. (I use web mail, Gmail instead and do not sync Gmail to my Putlook local client.)

We will see next week if this "ghost" past events continue to alert since I had no events on the weekend.

I have spent the last 2 evenings chatting with MobileMe tech support about this issue. I am experiencing the exact same issue described by Ron H. This is a known problem and has been reported to the engineers again tonight. Currently, there is no fix in 10.5.6 other than to manually delete the single incidence of the all-day recurring event from your iPhone 3G. (Note: I had the same problem on my original iPhone.) I have done extensive testing and trouble-shooting on this issue myself. This finding is recurrent and reproducible. My advice is to wait for Apple to fix this. I would be interested to know if anyone is NOT experiencing this problem, so that a comparison might be made.

This is an update email to my email from Jan. 16th.

This is to confirm that the fix mentioned by Jason on Jan. 16th and tried on Jan.16th by me did not work.

I still get notifications from these previously deleted (and no longer displayed in iCal) recurring events...every business day of the week where I had deleted recurring events.

I agree with Dr. Brian S Skrainka in that we need data from someone where adding a recurring event and deleting it does NOT cause subsequent notifcations for environment, hw and sw versioning, etc. comparisons.

One comparison/point of information is that my iPhone is not syncing to any calendar on a Mac or PC (except for the one time that Jason had me do as a possi ble correction to this error with my PC and MS Outlook). Prior to this one-time sync on Jan. 16th, I was observing this error (daily) as I had deleted daily recurring events on business days M-F. I am of still getting these notifcsations daily. THUS, it is likely not related to the Mac or PC so reporting the MAC or PC OSes version or other applications on the Mac or PC is inconsequential.

I truly beleive the issue is with the iPhone OS and/or the iCal app. on the iPhone. Something on the iPhone.

I also agree with Dr. Brian S Skrainka that we must wait for Apple to escalate this issue within their priorities of the iPhone OS and/or iCal groups and issue an iPhone download upgrade.

Patience is running thin as I am getting at least one notification every business day of the week in my case.

I also fear to create a never ending recurring event notification. I even fear creating any recurring event even if it is terminated with a recurrence end date.

Yes, I've been seeing this for a long time. And no amount of sync reset, turning off push calendar is going to fix it. MobileMe and iCal are properly handling changes to recurring events and iPhone is not.

I was hoping to get away from the drama that was so prevalent with my previous iCal-Treo calendaring anytime a recurring event was altered.

Also, recently I have to enter dummy events on my iPhone to get my iPhone to PULL changes from MobileMe/cloud.

After my email from Jan. 16th, I began taking a fresh look at this issue on Jan. 17th. I was thinking what else could cause such a message when I saw TWO calendars in my iCal app. Was there a hidden 3rd Calendar I was not seeing? Was there a another way to be notified of events?

Well, it appears not only did I schedule the Events in iCal, BUT ALSO I had scheduled Alarms for these Events using the Apple Clock app. I remembered I was quite new to using the iPhone when I scheduled these recurring Events. Actually on the day I bought the iPhone. Instead of using the Alert feature for an iCal Event, I used the Alarm feature in the iPhone's Clock app. to get recurring Alarm Alerts 30 minutes before the recurring events occurred!

Also notice that Clock Alarm Alerts appear strikingly similar to iCal Event Alerts when they appear on the screen. Not exactly, but very similar. Once I deleted the Alarms, I no longer recieved recurring notifications.

Sorry for the late notification to this email thread. Today I was creating a new alarm when I remembered I fixed my issue, but did not report it to this thread.

This now explains why deleting the several recurring Events (with no Alerts actually assoicated with them) did not delete Alerts from occurring....because they were (still existing) Clock Alarm Alerts. I just hope that Apple makes the two types of Alerts appear quite differently when they gwet annuciated into a MessageBox (like adding a TitleBar in the Alert MessageBoxes indicating it is coming from iCal or iClock app.) would be quite helpful indeed!

Hope this helps at least some of you. Check your Clock app's Alarms.
